BMW 530d X-Drive F10 Caught fire while driving

Smoke started to pour out from the ventilation system and the car shut off.
About 30 seconds later the whole engine area was on fire.

Aprox 70000km / 45k miles on the speedo.
Had all the service work done at the BMW dealer it was bought new from.

Any clues on how this could happen? How is this even possible?
This happened 4 months ago and still not a single word from BMW.

That is crazy! I've had something similar happen to a turbo volvo, the turbo oil leaked and somehow caused a fire in the engine bay. My 528 had the oil filter housing fail and cause oil to spray all over my engine but i pulled over before there could be much damage.

Remember a fire may not be caused by any fault in the car itself.

Vermon can be responsible for biting through wires and pipes, even building nests which catch fire.

I can imagine it wil be hard to identify what the cause was, unless there is a pattern of fires, some caught early.

Sorry to see this, must've been quite unpleasant experience. At the end of the day though, it's just a car, you and people around are safe and that's all it matters.

Hope you get it all sorted out with BMW, 4 months is a long time, surprised you heard nothing from them yet. They can't be enjoying this type of publicity on forums and youtube. Then again, it cannot be easy for them to determine what exactly happened, could be million different things that led to this.

Ouch...

Whole front just melted away, must have been one hell of a fire... And such intense fire was fuelled by what?

Good nothing happened to you, could have been worst!

I'm assuming the car is a total loss (of course it is), and that insurance is picking this all up. Why are you waiting around for BMW?

You need some new wheels!

That's the worst car fire I have ever seen. I would love to know what the hell happened.

Bill

Bill, you are correct. I kind of got lost in thinking BMW should examine and investigate this situation, too.

But, you snapped me out of it. You're right. This is just an accident and the insurance should step in and make the op whole. BMW should purchase the salvage for its investigation.

But, in reality, BMW would probably be advised to stay out of this unless the insurance company drags them into this kicking and screaming.

75K km, if still the under 4 years old is under warranty right ? I'm only guessing here, but if faulty part or something their service department did wrong is to blame, they would want to take a look a this, no ?

The cause I guess will be up to the owner's insurance carrier to try and determine, should it wish to get its $20,000+ or so back. Likely not worth the cause and origin investigation.

But damn, I would love to know what happened.

Something like:
"We are so sorry. Do you want to buy a new one?"

I would take a knife in the back rather than watching this.

Yeah, luckily enough no one was harmed!

I know, it's very strange. I've googled around and watched a few car fires but I haven't found anyhting that you can compare to this fire.

Indeed. It's a shame though that they wont do anything. You can still walk into the dealership and order a new 530d X-drive F10.
Would I consider it if BMW investigated this car and found the source of the problem?
Yes, but it leaves me with a lot of questions now since they don't.

Thanks for sharing. I am glad no one was hurt. I hope that depreciation doesn't hit you too hard, and on the bright side (no pun intended), you get a second chance at choosing accessories.

Edit: It kind of looks like it started on the passenger side - could it be the wiper fluid which started that inferno?

Nope, bone stock!
So yeah, thankfully don't need to call Saul Goodman!

Well the hole in the hood is pretty much central, then it starts to burn more intense on the passenger side. This car also had the Webasto "Auxiliary Heating" option installed.

I know you are OK and that insurance paid for your loss.

But the cause here really irks me. And its not even my car!

I suspect it is driving you nuts. Did BMW have any speculation?
