Smoke On Hard Accelleration
My 2011 550i has the usual oil burning issues, but they other night I was on the freeway and nailed it, I looked back and saw a pretty good cloud of smoke in the headlights behind me. My car's only got 50,000 miles on it and it came with the 6 year/100,000 mile CPO warranty.
I've got an appointment on Monday to take my car in, my concern is that BMW will keep telling me that the oil usage is normal and so is the smoking under hard acceleration, then my warranty will be up, then they'll tell me that my rings and valve guides and seals are toast and it'll cost $$$ since my car is no longer under warranty. Am I being overly sensitive here, I haven't had a car that used this much oil or smoked like this since my Vega in high school (yes, I'm that old). I'll see what they say at the dealership, but has anyone else here had this issue, and if so, what what the outcome? Last edited by Chili Palmer; 01-18-2014 at 08:19 PM.. |

Not on an F10, but I had a 2005 330i ZHP (essentially an M-Sport) which included different camshafts and sportier exhaust and had a similar issue. When I bought the car at 70k miles it was burning 1 quart every 900 miles or so ( of course I didn't know this at the time of purchase). Brought the car to BMW while it was under warranty and was told it was normal. By the time I got to 100k it was down to 400 miles per quart. Had an indy mechanic that I really trust run some diagnostics and he confirmed it was the oil rings and that this was not an isolated issue with BMW's aluminum engines. Estimate to fix was $4k. Needless to say that was my queue to move on to an F10.

For the OP: I don't think anyone could call a 900-mile-per-quart consumption rate "normal" with a straight face. BMW doesn't give themselves that much slack. They say a quart per 1,000 miles, but this is 10% above that rate. And I don't think even that standard represents a "norm" by any stretch of the imagination. It may be acceptable under BMW's guidelines, but I doubt there are many cars using oil at that rate, and I doubt that those cars, with that consumption rate, are able to pass state emission tests.

BMW will tell you a quart per 750 miles is normal. I agree that this is outrageous, but that is how they have been dealing with this issue. And even at the crazy rate my car was consuming oil, it passed NYS emission no problem and didn't blow any smoke AT ALL! Not even under hard acceleration.

But, if you drive normally, 1 qt every 750 is ridiculous. |

The only smoke your 550i should be producing under hard acceleration should be coming from the rear two tires. This sounds ridiculous to me - something is wrong.
I know a lot of 550 owners pre-LCI have complained about excessive oil use, getting low oil messages after only a few thousand miles of driving. Then again, others have said they've gone the standard service interval without issue.

A quart every of $9 oil every 900 miles to me sounds excessive, but how do you argue or try to prove them (BMW) wrong? In most cases I bet either there must be leaking seals or the rings have gotten a little sloppy in their cylinders. I have oily exhaust splatter all over my garage fridge, but not a single bit of soot from my Duramax diesel. You'd think the diesel would be the dirtier of the two, but apparently not.

So that means it was driven hard for 18,000 miles since whoever had it had no real responsibility other than not crashing it.
