Now its suddenly got cold, notice more tramlining
Probably obvious but now that the temperature down here in the south has dropped to around 0C or so, I've really noticed how the tyres tramline more
Given it's been quite mild and the temperature has only just dropped this week , its quite a marked difference from only a week ago in terms of handling. As I've mentioned before on these forums, this tramlining is one of the most annoying things about these RFT. I have 19" wheels with msport suspension. I check my pressures every few weeks and as the temperature has dropped , made a point of checking them again (they were down a little) and put 2.3bar front and back. *(that's 0.1bar up on the what the door panels states for the front tyres assuming not fully loaded) |

I don't follow why BMW run such low pressures on a 19" wheel, not surprised they tramline, particularly when cold and/or when the temperature drops.
My car's placard for 18" wheels give 2.0bar for normal use. If I ran at that pressure I'd feel every change in road camber and the car would tramline. Plus the outer edges would be knocked off prematurely. I run 2.35 - 2.4bar cold setting on my front tyres. That gives the best steering and balances wear across the tyres. No tramlining whatsoever. I remember one occasion when the temperature dropped rapidly and even at my setting pressure, a drop of 0.2bar (due to the cold and tyres not warming up as fast), felt a bit of steering tug on uneven roads. Put more air back in to compensate for the temperature drop, back to normal road feel. I imagine on a hot summer day on decent roads, on a long drive where the tyres will heat up, the placard pressures may work. But on my typical drives and in typical temperatures I have to compensate for not getting to an ideal working temperature and resulting pressure. BTW, this is not peculiar to my current F11, my E91 also required higher front pressures to get the best steering feel and balance wear. I run 18" summer and 17" winter wheels. As to the feel from the RFTs, best way to describe it would be the 17" (at winter temperatures), feel very much the same as the 18" on hot summer days. I recently had my F10 520d aligned on Hunter equipment and he recommended I use 37 - 38 to save the outside edges, I compromised and dropped it back to 35 (2.4) and it definitely feels better

Set my car with 2.4 bar all round and seeing how it goes. Temperature is mild again so perhaps not quite a valid test yet but will see how it goes over the next few weeks, particularly if the temperature drops again.
Only concern is could I be causing more wear on the middle of the tyres? I'm no expert on this but thought if you under inflate a tyre, the edges take the brunt of the wear and if you over inflate, the middle of the tyre takes the brunt of the wear. |

To me anything under 2.5 bar seems low, usually runs 2.6 to 2.7. This is on non-RFT tires both summer and winter tyres.
