Smart opener not working

Hi all,

Today I discovered after removing my rear bumper, my car has smart opener. I tried to 'kick' under te bumper and the lid did not open. I checked the coding and the coding was alredy on active. Also there is 12V to the module.

Why is my smart opener not working, could someone help me to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

Could be you're not doing the proper kick technique? I heard you need an Engineering degree to do this

I have to swing my leg randomly with the key in my pocket. Randomly means I don't know what will work each time I try.

Garage List
When I picked up my new F10, the customer adviser explained that you do the hokey pokey. No kidding. You put your foot in, and then you put your foot out. To be more precise, standing behind the car and facing towards the front, you take your right foot (or left if you prefer) and move it directly forward under the bumper. Then you pull it straight back. This works for me over 95% of the time.

It's a matter of how you kick it.. my first year had a 50% success rate on first try
After reading the forum, you need to stand in the middle and do a swift kick, just slight swings in and out. Now I am 100% hit on the first try.

And a "swing" won't work. The kick must be a perpendicular movement.

From my experience, the leg swing has to be at a very exact location under the bumper. Try swinging your leg at a spot directly under right end of your numberplate.

If you have coded your trunk to close with the remote fob then the same technique works to close an open trunk as well.

That's not true in my case. As long as you are in the middle, even a slight swirl- swing works on mine.

Hmmm... The swing never works for me no matter where I do it. There is probably some variance in sensitivity between cars.

Thanks for your replies. I tried different methods, but the trunk is not opening... I also found in de FRM module SMART_OPENER_COD_FAHRZEUGTYP (see attachment). I doubt if the sensors are installed correctly. Could someone confirm this?

First you should decode your VIN to check if you actually have the option.

S316A should be it.
Personally I never have any trouble with mine.
Had any repair work done back there?

Yes, the rear bumper is replaced with non oem one. Could the problem that the 2 sensors at the car are too close on each other? You can see the sensors at the first post.

Now it can be a few things, covered up, miss aimed, broken, not connected, etc.

Reviving this post to ask if OP found the solution? Mine stopped working 2 years ago and now that I have a real garage I'm catching up on small fixes. I'm wondering if it's more likely that the sensors go bad, or the control module.
