Post break in oil change advice?

Hi guys, need some advice on post break in oil change. I know there is already a post on a DIY oil change @ around 1200 miles. Mines just done 1400, I am also contemplating an oil change. I have to go to the service centre cuz I don't have enough space to do a DIY.
What are your thoughts?

When I lived in an apartment (flat, I think you chaps call it) I would do my oil changes in the parking lot (car park?). If that's not possible, find a friend with a garage that you can borrow. If you have no friends

then maybe an independent shop will rent you work space. If that won't work, or you just truly don't want to do it yourself, then fine, take it to a garage. Anyone can do it, there's nothing special about a BMW oil change. If you don't go to the dealer you might want to buy the filter ahead of time since an independent garage likely won't have one in stock.

As for it being unnecessary, yes, it probably is, but if you intend to keep the car for a very long time, then it's a good thing to do and it certainly won't hurt anything.

If you plan on keeping the car for a long time, then it's cheap insurance. If you're gonna sell it on after 5-6 years or it's a lease, all you're doing is helping the next owner.

hah, called my local German BMW dealer to schedule a post break-in oil change (logic in this post made sense to me so called) they were a bit annoyed with me, wouldn't let me schedule it, told me basically that it was not required.

If any of your know the German culture well, if something is not required then it is NOT required!

Buy the parts yourself and take it some place that specializes in BMW's they will know how to do it properly.

I have a guy at the dealer who does it cash if i bring him the oil. I did it at 1200 miles. He charged me $30. And yes I lease my car. If I decide to keep it, it will be worth it. Plus I put the good M oil in 10-60W in the car so it's extra happy...

no offense, but there's a reason they tell you which oil to put in....I don't know which oil the 550i requires, but I wouldn't go putting in different viscocity than recommended by BMW......please ignore this comment if the 550i does in fact require 10W-60 oil, but if it doesn't I wouldn't put it in, and it's more expensive! I had to use that stuff in my M3.

I have to agree with this. Not sure what the 550i specs, but a 10W-60 sounds very thick. I'm more inclined to follow the manufactures specs, especially considering how specific BMW is about oils.
