I mean, really, BMW has done a lot break throughs. I still remember the first time I drove 335d, that was just amazing. I couldn't believe that's a diesel. The new 640d is even better. It is just 0.1 dec slower than 640i 0-62mph. I think most ppl are with me so far. The sad thing is they don't bring that much diesel to the US. BTW, I am a true BMW aficionado. Bimmer all the way
Make sense to me.
And somehow you guys conviniently forget that Porsche are using VAG diesel in theyr car's now (Cayenne, Panamera)
What's better or worse?
The world evolves, get back on the carousel people, it's not slowing down, not within this company it is, and that is a good thing imo.
BMW are a progressive brand, and very exciting times are ahead of us imo.

Gasoline=petrol is a bit cheaper than diesel in the UK.

Diesel is a LOT cheaper than gasoline/petrol in continental Europe.

Not in the UK it isn't, diesel is more expensive than petrol here also. £1.35/l for Petrol vs. £1.39/l for diesel according to our UK averages, thats $8.44 and $8.69 per US Gallon respectively.

edit: Actually, Super Unleaded (98 RON) is more expensive than Diesel.
Just curious. What is the favorite alternate transport other than car in Uk? Bus, train? What about in less developed areas? I'm guessing they're are some great bicycle lanes over there?

Cheers

I hope you are familiar with the LM rules? It's more marketing than you think. Put some turbos on the petrol competition and you know what I mean.

Let's see what the specs will be, I'd say 420-450BHP but never 500+....
Yet it would hold its value much better than a petrol slurping 550i.

The power output has been rumored to be 280kw - on a german board there was some sort of info about this engine being placed in the 7 series (750d) also.

Lets just say there would be a little bit more power, as it being an ''M'', we would be looking at around 390-400hp.

I don't know who wrote that article but 500+ hp is a joke for sure.

We do have a proliferation of cycle lanes, but in many rural areas there is no alternative to the car. All things considered though, buses are probably the most common and cheapest alternative. I could do virtually all my travelling via buses, and it would definatley be cheaper for me than driving, however, it would also involve quite a lot of walking, and buses don't tend to be very direct. If I drive to the next town it takes me about 15 minutes, and costs £5-6 return in fuel... I can do it on the bus for £3.20 return, but its a 15 min walk to the bus stop, and a 40 minute bus journey whilst it meanders it's way around the other stops.

What's wrong with people wanting a diesel powered 5 series that's tuned to handle like an M5? I'm sure it would be popular in Europe, and with all wheel drive, it would also be a great all weather car.

This is gonna be cool.

But I can't imagine it'll be over 500hp. Even 400hp is a lot.

Exactly. The article is pretty much BS. I'm surprised that it's spread so widely. What we already "know" is

- 6 cylinder
- 3 turbos
- around 700 NM tq
- Hp somewhere around 360-400
- Some kind of like M-variant/badging likely
- xDrive very likely

So someone just decided to spill "confirmed" BS around with 550 hp ratings and so on. Very clever. Reality check please. Who confirmed?? "Unknown source". Oh yes.

However, i will never buy another petrol car. Test drove a Porsche Cayman about a month ago and felt it was slow. Got back into my 320d which has 50% more torque and 80 less BHP than the Cayman and it felt like a rocket.
There is so much wrong with this I don't know where to even start......I love diesels, for an every day lazy car, but you took it about 10 steps to far.

Cheers,

I strongly suspect that all the diesel haters in this thread never even tried the 535d F10 or 335d E90.
As I'm driving both a 535d and a M3 I can tell from experience that the 535d might not have have the raw speed of the M3. And true, the M3 is BMW's closest thing to a real race car. But IRL on the public road, even on the autobahn hardly any car will outrun the 535d. In-gear acceleration in 3rd, 4th gear is unbeatable.
Fuel consumption of the M3 is roughly double that of the 535d.

Gracias.

Maybe when the F30 3 series comes out later this year/2012 I switch to a F30 335d instead of a 335i...I'm not anti diesel. Not at all(had a A3 TDI back in '99 chipped to 130BHP back then, and a 330d E46 in 2001, great car)

Such a big expensive M550D :

Pennywise(mpg etc) poundfoolish(the startingprice of a .35/50d vs its petrol counterpart)....

diesel=better torque (it's what makes you take off like a bat out of hell).
Diesel engines don't have sparks. Upgrade injector nozzles, software, better free flow exhaust-less back pressure-and better spooling turbo, and one should get a better performance (torque and horsepower but more so torque) and better GAS MILEAGE!!!!.
I would highly recommend to drive X5 35 petrol vs X5 35D.

I was one of those that didn't believe in diesel; but recently, technology altered that mentality. If anything, diesel engines will outlast gasoline engines.

In the US the BMW X5 35d is the marques biggest selling diesel. Diesel is successful in sales for the X5 and not so for the 335d as a majority of customers pick the 335i instead.

The next diesel on US shores will be the X3 Diesel and plans to introduce a smaller four cylinder diesel will arrive with the US market X1.

this is one of the tuner's claim on 335d. I won't mention the name of the tuner, but if you must know, PM me.

BMW 3.0sd BiTurbo (originally found in BMW X5 xDrive35d model)

Before: 265 HP and 425 ft-lb

After: 310-340 HP and 515 ft-lb

does that convince anyone?
