Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I got a pretty good offer for a 2015 535 here in the Toronto area. I just never thought that my first Bimmer would be a diesel! It drove pretty nicely.

A local BMW Dealership made me spin around a 2015 535D with M Sport package yesterday. Looks wise, it is just what a want. Dark Graphite with Oyster/Black Dakota Leather.

How do you all find the Diesel for day to day driving? I work as a Sales & Management Consultant so I am out and about to visit clients often. Fuel Economy matters but of course, I want that extra kick when required :-)

The diesel sound did not bother me but maybe the sales person was talking too much during my tester, and I missed something. lol

But overall, for those diesel owners, how are you enjoying your car? Do you miss the 300 HP that you would get from the 535xi or does the torque of the 535d, make up for it?

The torque makes you forget very quickly the 45 hp deficit. In everyday traffic, the diesel actually feels quicker. Pulling away from a stop you feel the torque... And it feels effortless.

It gets 25-26 mpg around town and over 40 mpg on the highway. My average is 33 mpg over the life of the car.

Also, in my area diesel is cheaper than premium, so it's a win-win.

If you can get past the Diesel engine sound, which is barely noticeable, then I'd get the diesel.

I had a 535i, and now the 535d, and I do not regret my decision at all. Search the forums... There have been a few comparisons in the last year.

Did I mention the torque?

How much sound are u talking cause when they loaned me a 3 series diesel it chattered like my parents Volvo. Couldn't stand driving the thing So I ended up using my son's Toyota corolla until my car was done. I hear people saying that the 5 series diesel's are quite but here's another post about the sound again. Just curious if it's just loud for some people and quiet for others?

I didn't hear the sound that much yesterday during my test drive.

I will search more of the forums as well. I am leaning towards the diesel

I love the six cylinder diesels and think they sound quite nice, I wouldn't have a four cylinder though. Although it puts out decent power just doesn't sound right in a big car and this engine can sound clattery.

If you did low mileage I would say go for petrol, however sounds like you do some mileage so diesel just seems to make sense for you. I love the torque of my 535d (UK 530d), however my last four BMW's have been diesel so I haven't had a BMW straight six since my 325i which I had 10 years ago.

I have a 535d xDrive. I got it because of the torque. Gas cars tend to have max HP at or near redline so you have to rev the 535 pretty hard to get the max power, but at lower RPM you have a lot less HP to work with. With diesels you get more tq down low and then they just get to lower redlines. I would personally be interested to see an overlay of the tq and HP graphs between the two cars, but I would venture to say that from 0-4k rpm, the 535d has more tq AND HP than the 535, and then around 4k RPM and higher the 535 starts to overtake it on HP. Since most people tend to drive around 4k rpm and less on a day to day... the car seems faster in day to day use. Sure on a track when you're going to redline in each gear the difference might seem noticeable. Also as far as MPG, I just completed an 1800 mile road trip and I averaged 35MPG the whole time and when I was on the highway I averaged 85-90mph (don't judge me) so I'm sure if I averaged 65-70mph I would have been well over 40mpg.

This is my second diesel. I had a 12 x5d that was good. But my 14 535d is far superior. You do not miss the 45hp (also have a 15 X5 3.5 Xline) the torque makes up for it. The mileage is spectacular as you can see from the below picture. Good luck on your purchase.

I guess I'll have to test drive a diesel? Torque over horsepower? I'd choose horsepower because that's usually where I'm redlining as I'm smashing through gears.

Can you tell what you didn't like about the x5d? I'm trying to justify this for my wife's car to replace her x5 3.0si. My other option is to go toureag diesel for Her. Thx

I liked everything about the X5d. The car ride great with the sports package. Was able to get 32-36mpg highway. The 535d is a completely different ride with a newer transmission and engine.

If your cross shopping the X5d verses the competition, get it hands down. You will not be disappointed.

now is power stock : 285hp / 60torque >>
ecu remap upgrade 397hp / 74 torque

too much fast and good condition

it is faster than srt8, bmw 550i , same by e82 1mcoupe 420hp

more faster than g37s intake& exhaust

here is not perfect video accellration at highway...( too much car and
windy )

and dynojet wheel power test

I am going to the dealership again to listen to the 'engine' idling and while revving.

Your feedback and first hand experiences are helping me. In the Toronto area, you are lucky if you get to hit 70 mph with all of our freakin' traffic.

you give up a LOT of refinement with the diesel. if you want a sweet smooth car go gas 535i rwd. SO much better. trust me, ive owned both.

You live in Toronto, so something to consider is the cold idling sound in winter months. The sound does get better as engine warms up but you will still hear it in narrow alleyways, drive thru etc.. I have an X5 D and a petrol 335, and I know it not really fair to compare the horse power and torque of these two vehicles, I still must say that the X5 is very sluggish compared to the 335 with much less torque. X5 is great for travelling but for daily use I'd the the 335 everyday.

I had a 2011 535xi and now a 2014 535xd. I prefer the diesel, especially for city driving. Accelerating around town seems much more effortless in the diesel, rpms stay low and gear changes are less frequent, the car just goes. On the highway, the gasoline engine is quicker, but not by much and I never miss the extra horsepower. Yes the diesel makes more noise, but you don't hear much of it inside the car, even in the cold and the engine is smooth. I've never had any starting issues in the cold, even when the temperature drops to -30C. If I had to choose, I'd take the diesel again. I also don't mind the extra 30-40% range. I used to average 13 l/100km in my 535xi, now I average 9.5 l/100km in my 535xi and that is 90% city driving.

I test drove the diesel again today. I preferred it over the 528i. The 535xi def feels better at higher RPM's.

However, I did find the diesel to be pretty quiet and the torque to be lovely. Think I am going to get this car! Will update the group!

No question the xi will feel better at high revs, but with the xd you just don't need to go high in the rev range, all the power is down low. It's a different driving experience, and probably not for everyone, but I like it. Good luck with your decision, you can't go wrong either way really.
