Windshield need replace

Just saw my windshield and its shattered all over. Found a brick sitting by the wiper. Car was park..
Anyway, my car have HUD, LD etc. I called GEICO and they told me if I have the dealer change the windshield, I'm responsible for the workmanship over $40hr..
Also if their affiliates don't have the aftermarket in stock, then they can approve OEM..
My comprehensive is covering glass... Should I contact Safelite or just take the car to the dealer. They mention if the car goes to the dealer I will have to pay out of pocket and then file for reimbursement.

Need some help here, how should I approach this..

Thanks
Steve

Ouch!

I think as long as BMW approves u should be fine. I would rather go through the insurance since that's what u pay all that money for. If anything if the insurance does it try to really push for OEM.

I just did 3 windshields in 4 months.

I just paid for the dealer directly. My State Farm agent cut me a check for the full amount less deductible after my sending the invoice via email.

You should tell your insurance company to fix it---they took the risk with a BMW and BMWs cost more.

It makes me so angry when I hear bull crap like that $40 limit.

You should seriously find new insurance if they refuse to promptly let the dealer fix the car. The only thing you should pay is your deductible.

Avoid using Safelite. Their glass material is a bit softer than other aftermarket brands causing to have a lot of chips from little rocks flying in when driving. I would go with OEM from BMW even if you have to pay out of packet.

Most dealers sub out their windshield work. I would go to the dealer and ask them who is their glass guy and use them directly. BMW windshield can cost over $1000 more than aftermarket or OEM. Most BMW windshields are made by St. Gobain-Sekurit, I would try to find a glass guy that sells St. Gobain-Sekurit windshield. Its pretty much the same windshield but without the BMW logo and at aftermarket price. Most insurance companies will not pay the dealer's rate for glass work. If the glass installer does a lot of BMW, the workmanship should be the same if not better than the dealer.

Spoke to Rallye BMW, cost will be $2400 out of my pocket, then try to get back it from the insurance.
Spoke to Geico, they approve BMW glass from Safelite(was told the glass will have a BMW stamp on it), Geico will cover all expense, since i have glass coverage. No out of pocket cost to me. Geico paying Safelite around $1000, was told work is warrantied.

Need more info, to make this call.. Geico keep telling me that they wont covered the over charge by the dealer.. only $40hr.

Safelite will bring you a piece of BMW glass. Replacing windows is all they do. It won't cost you a penny. What is still in question??

Note that Safelite uses their own adhesive / epoxy that I hear cures / dries too quickly, and if the dealer does a proper job, the BMW adhesive / epoxy cures / dries more slowly to ensure complete bond / seal.

Keep us posted!

Not to say Safelite can't get it right, but yes, matters if you don't want squeaks, rattles, leaks...

I have had Safelite replace about 6 windshields over the years. I have never had a problem with leakage or wind noise. The only issue was when they used generic glass and it was seriously distorted along the bottom.

As long as BMW has their name stamped at the bottom.

I'm not aware of epoxy being used for windshield installation. Advanced polyurethane structural adhesives are what comes to mind.

I see epoxy mentioned in the ebay write up but still have my doubts about epoxy being used.

Just Googled the topic on a number of sites and urethane adhesives are what is used - just as I originally thought.

It is possible that epoxy is used for the rear view mirror but the windshield is bonded to the car with polyurethane adhesive.

Make sure in the installation takes good care of sensors above the interior mirror, my advice take a picture before and make sure after is the same, i.e. when the gel is applied around the sensors! see my tread after replacing my one and getting confused about the headlight sensor, the dealer thinking it was an air bubble! http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1091963
