buying advice

Just about to buy a 520d SE 2012 on a 12 plate. My query is about the timing chain and is this engine effected? Its the N47 engine.
Thanks in advance.

A quick question to help understand your post.

What makes you think that the N57 has timing chain issues? General forum posts, BMWs diesel engines in general or something more specific?

Its been featured on watchdog and some tales on the web, its mainly from 2007 to 2011 but maybe the later ones have not done the milage yet. I think in general the long service intervals don't help. Considering how many units of the N47 are in use its probably a very small percentage that are affected. I just wanted to find out before i commit to this purchase.

I believe parts were changed from 10/2010 production - so you are likely to be safe. There are enough cars with high mileage since 2010, and the problem has not really been reported since then.

Thanks for your reply and I have just purchased the car. I am returning to BMW ownership after a few years away. I have previously owned E30, E36, and E90 cars and never had any major problems.

The N47 was supposed to have these problems until March 2011 engine build. Google for it, there is load on the forums. That said, there are isolated reports of post-03/11 N47s having problems too.
I ran a 2012 520d F10 for 2 years and got shot of it at 40k miles and before it was out of warranty as I started hearing some odd noises from the rear of the engine...

OP asked about the N47 engine. There has been a recall on certain of these engines
