Ask the dealer to start another car with the same engine and compare.
I'd be seriously concerned if my diesel sounded like that and we get some seriously cold starting conditions up here in Scotland. |

Could be the hydraulic valve lifters ticking at a cold start(the mechanical noise).
When does the noise stop?(usually after a couple of kms when they are filled with oil) Oil used is a bit thick at a cold start. But that's just guessing. Mine does tick a bit as well at a cold start , but not diesel-like , like yours though.... |

Take it back to the dealer and compare the noise level with a similar engine model, as that seems loud. To me (my opinon) seems to relate to the hydraulic valve lifters having air trapped inside them, not sure if this will work but have heard rumors that if you rev your engine to 3K for approx 5 mins, this should clear the air out with the amount of pressure. Start the car normaly the next day and see if the noise has cleared.

ive noticed my start ups r gettin a little bit louder /more aggressive .. like a growl (a small one, dont laugh) -its a good noise to hear im at 900km .. does the car know how to do this by itself? the changing throttle noise i mean .. its like my kid is entering puberty or something |

Your cold start is likely a litlle colder than mine (It was 35 in my garage this morning, 20 outside), but I have not noticed this noise. I have a 2012 528i
I must say though that my engine sounds like a diesel upon startup. |

I drove a loaner 2010 528i last week, it sounds exactly like it. I agree with Robin Hood, it's probably your hydraulic lifters and/or high pressure injectors.

We just took delivery of 12 550i and I have a very similar sound at cold startup. It originally sounded like a metal shield or piece of metal vibrating but when lifted the hood it appears to be coming directly from motor?? I am going to call service to ask?? Sounds horrible but after a few minutes the sound goes away?
