The auto start/stop will be added to the autobox during spring next year.

I drove a demo car with this feature and didn't like it. I suppose you'd adjust in time, but I found it unnerving to have the engine 'dying' every time I stopped the car.
I found there was always that nagging 'will it restart' doubt - of course, it does so perfectly well, but it's not for me.

You can always turn the option off with a press of the button just underneath the ignition button. I only use it at traffic lights which keeps me waiting for a few minutes.

Yea, I rent a BMW from a local rental place here when I drive into countries I dont want to take my own cars. They always have that option and I look for that very button asap. I have had that shut my car off in traffic circle when I coast through not in gear.

My 120dM has the auto start/stop. As I mostly drive it on the highway it's not of much use to me. Makes sense when I go into the city during rush hour though.

Gorban, This is great news for me.
How sure are you about this? Where did you here this?
I need to order a new car soon and start-stop combined with an autobox is an absolute prerequisite for me (company car, London traffic). I thought I was going to have to go for a Benz or A6.

Any info is much appreciated.

LongJohn,

I would suspect that you will get this feature on or before we do in the states. I thought I read somewhere that it would possibly come out this fall but cannot remember my source. Trust me, eventually all BMW Models will have this feature as it will help them achieve gas consumption regs being placed on them by all the various governments. I will see if I can find the article in the latest BMW Roundel....I know I saw it somewhere!

In the meantime, write or call BMW directly as see if they can tell you anything.

I had no idea there was a button to turn this so called "feature" off - If I had known . . . . I rented a car with this feature in Germany and I hated it.

I've heard a lot of talk of auto start/stop coming with the 2012 models of the 5 Series and with it being added into every new series by BMW I fully expect it, but don't have direct sources to link. The new 3 Series is also getting the tech, so it's to the point where it doesn't make sense for it to NOT be included.

I have it on my 535i delivered in the USA. I picked-up the car in June 2010. I am not sure but you may need the drivers assist package.
