Automatic Start/Stop

I was just wondering what anyone thinks of the stop stop feature. I don't really know if like it all that much, plus I feel like with time it will start to prematurely cause some wear to the starter, although I'm not entirely sure.

Can it be permanently disabled?
I don't really know if it's even saving on fuel.

The F10 use a heavy duty starter design for the start stop function. Of course it will save fuel when your car is shut off at a stop, how much it save depends on the traffic. You can have the dealer reprogram the start stop function to remember its last setting, meaning that if you shut it off, it will stay off the next time you start the car.

It is an easy coding procedure to remove the function. (i.e. off by default). If you are not in coding world yet, it could be a good start.

When I'm in traffic situations when I will be stopped for 45-90+ seconds I'm ok with the stop-start option. However, during most of my driving (I'd say 90%) I'll be stopped for 10-15 seconds. Under those circumstances the "feature" is a PIA and causes (IMHO) undo wear and stress on the battery/starting/charging system. IF BMW was really at the top of their in class in engineering they would have tightly integrated NAV, GPS, and traffic data with the stop-start feature, wrote an algorithm that better turned an annoyance into a real benefit. But hey, this is only 2013 and it's only a car! BTW - I understand that by 2015 Hyundai / Kia will have the details worked out and offered as standard equipment across the entire line.

Is it possible to retrofit this feature on a 2011 535i?

I doubt it, there is a lot of components and software involve.
