I currently have my headlights protected with medium tint Lamin-x, as I remember the ones on my 545 getting pretty pitted. I'm thinking that I don't like the tinted look anymore and want a more clear look. Which means to either simply remove the tint, or go with a the lightest shade.

Is anyone experienting pitting supporting the need for protection?

I've had my 550i for 3 years and the pitting nominal in my opinion. With the xenons on at night, there is some slight surface scars when up close but stepping back 5 feet or more not something you notice at all. I don't think its necessary.
