Hartge trip and ECU install on F10 550i

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
My Hartge ECU install took place yesterday and I can only recommend their services to fellow BMW owners. Although I drove to their facility they do a tremendous amount of sales internationally and are worth checking out. Hartge's official stats for their 550i ECU is 360 kW (490 hp) / 5500 rpm 720 Nm (lb-ft 531) / 6400 rpm.

I don't winterize my 550i so leaving my home at 730am with temperature around 25F (but dry) I was a bit nervous. The drive ended up being uneventful albeit slow. Showed up at the Hartge facility at 9am and was met by Jörg who was my consultant from day one. He was just as friendly and helpful in person as over the many emails we shared. They had a great waiting room and the entire process took about 3 hours and involved some pre-ECU runs, some post-ECU runs and the actual install.

When it was complete, Jörg actually downplayed its results a bit more then I expected and up until the time I drove off I was a unsure if I would be happy with the results. On the way out the door he said, "enjoy your flight" and the mechanic who did the work was waiting outside and just smiled at me, hinting towards his approval of his work. I guess when you come in person they talk about your driving style and they are able to tweak the ECU to better fit your car and you. The drive from their facility to the autobahn was about 15 minutes and I felt no difference but didn't try to since I wanted my first impression to be unrestricted, luckily their entrance point to the autobahn is.

I had the car in normal mode and non S mode on transmission and when the pedal hit 70% the car grabbed and literally launched like I would never have imagined. The 550i is a fast car to begin with, one of the times they trapped was 80kmh/50mph to 180kmh/110mph, my "old" stock 550i did it in 11,4 seconds the "new" 7,2 seconds. You feel those 4 seconds in your gut and the car is transformed. It is a new car.

As it turned out I had forgot some documentation and since the facility was only an hour from my home I decided to drive back with it instead of mail it. The day had warmed up to 39F and was dry so I really ran the car through the ropes and the power was incredibly ready and without hesitation from 80kmh all the way up to 260kmh.

Please feel free to hit me up via pm for any questions regarding my experience with Hartge and their ECU.

I love it! How did you not cringe when he put duct tape on the paint?

duct tape + car =

It didnt register at the time but I ended up doing an entire wash job at 36F because there was salt on the road and some serious road spray from basically two round trips to their facility yesterday.

Look at the bright side... the paint held up! If that were my Lexus the paint would have come off on the tape! haha

I´m glad You are happy with the result! Told You you wouldn´t be disappointed.

I know what you are talking about. It really makes a difference.
Low end torque is addictive.

Thanks for sharing.
The difference in performance is stunning, must be very close now to an M5!
I'm thinking about a visit to Hartge with my X5 35d.

Enjoy and drive safely!

Yea, when I first heard some of the numbers they didnt sink in. While waiting for them to finish up I realized just how much faster on paper my car was and was getting pretty excited about driving it, by far the fastest car I have owned.

Double thanks to you Cid, not sure if I would've went through with it without hearing your experience, especially when you ran into problems and how much Hartge and the Swiss insurance stepped up even though it wasn't their fault. Speaks volumes about Hartge. Like Jörg said, "enjoy your new car!"

Thanks Edwin, I know I can eat at M3 for breakfast now but I would have to pack a BIG lunch for the new M5 and hope the driver gets weak kneed above 200kmh, lol, which is possible.

Lots of folks who dont even own the F10 talk about the steering (including car reviewers who wished they had one) fact is, with the stock options I have on my car, I will run it up to 260kmh and its rock solid like a champ. The ACSchnitzer springs make a world of difference but it was good before them too, they just take it to the next level.

The weather has been really bad here since the install on January 17th but this weekend was mild and clear. Yesterday I drove the A6 down to the French border and there are several really good unrestricted stretches and all I can say is I am really excited to going back by Hartge for some more test results (when its warm) because the instant and constant powerband all the way up to 260kmh is absolutely incredible. I have my speed limit warning set at 155mph and the effort that it requires to sound the "bong" is complete night and day. I can only recommend for other 550i/xi owners.

I would give Joerg either a call or email, he is very helpful. I dont know what their price would be for exporting but I do know they do a tremendous amount of exporting of their products worldwide.

I spoke to their US distributor and was told that they can only do it for EU cars not US ones

Not sure about Hartge, but Dinan tune only 550's are running pretty consistent 112-113 in the qtr mile. What do you run with your car?

Around 113-114 without meth. I'm planning on going meth soon and the record with meth is 117
This is all speculation based on others times

Then it would be a driver's race I would think, at least until you get your meth kit installed
