Go with "regular" or M-Sport option
Getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2014 528ix, or maybe 535ix if we can work a deal. I always liked the M package on any of the BMW models. Cosmetics aside does it make the 5 ride any sportier? That's $3,500 I can spend on other things if it doesn't truly add to the sport sedan experience.

No, on the xDrive car, M-Sport is purely cosmetic. As X says, the only thing you can do to help the drive experience on an xDrive F10 is add DHP, but doing that is absolutely critical. The xDrive F10 has the base suspension, and most people who have any degree of enthusiasm for the driving experience will find it too soft.
Candidly, even with the DHP doing its damper thing, I find the xDrive F10 to be sprung a little too soft. If mine were not a lease I would probably be looking at some stiffer springs.

I have driven a 535i M sport, 535xi base, and a 550xi w/DHP. I can tell you that DHP with xDrive will handle the best but with slightly less fun than the RWD due to the AWD nanny system. One feature I highly recommend is the multicontour and ventilated seats. |

If you had to choose between M Sport and DHP, there's no doubt about it - get DHP. DHP in Sport or Sport+ is pretty firm - certainly firm enough for a spirited drive. Otherwise, I keep mine in "Comfort" (normal) mode, and it drives perfectly fine for most applications.
M Sport is a nice look, though, and it'll add some cosmetic stuff both inside and out that's worth having IMHO. But it's not worth the price of sacrificing DHP, again, if you had to choose.

Do yourself a huge favor get the 535xi m-sport pack with DHP. The M sport gives you that gorgeous steering wheel, the anthracite headliner, and a much better looking set of rims and exterior body kit. You can work a great deal on a 5 right now. Drive a hard bargain and get the car optioned out the way you will LOVE it, not like it. The multi contoured seats are a game changer on the interior. If you can go the extra $$, the 535d is a better still drive. You get the old (hydraulic) steering. Now you have a supremely comfortable mid sized sports sedan.

My 2103 535 X Drive M Sport has all of the cosmetics mentioned above. In addition, the X Drive M sports have a higher steering effort than non M Sport cars. I can't comment on a RWD model M Sport as we don't get them in Canada. I initially found the steering effort too high (my arms were getting sore) but after a few thousand kilometres I now find it perfectly weighted. I found the non M Sport 528 steering to be to light and the skinny steering wheel made me feel like I was driving a Buick (which it is far from, of course).

OP is looking for a leftover 2014. Great deals are available, but inventory is limited.
It's true that DHP is only available with the 535, not the 528. I have a 528ix M Sport and it's about 150# lighter in the nose of the car than the 535ix. Lighter car handles slightly better around the turns. I'm doubtful there are many cars left that have DHP. Very much a special order item for the most part. I'm quite happy with the performance of my 528 and M Sport would make it look sportier.

The MSport line isn't $3,500 additional unless you're considering a no-lines model as an alternative, which IMO you really don't want to do. The luxury line is around $2,000, so the MSport line is only another $1,500 (less than that if I remember correctly).
After-market suspension upgrades are limited for x-drive models so although I'm not a fan of DHP, it's your best bet for a tighter suspension, provided you can find one. |

thanks for the feedback
I was going for a 2014 'cuz the deals were so good. So I ended up with a 535ix. It was the color combo I really wanted Alpine White/Black. They did have one 528 with M in imperial blue left.

Handling
Soooo...trying to decide between two 2014s, both 535i, both M sport with Dakota black leather.
One is Glacier Silver metallic (preferred color) and the other Carbon Black. Living in North Texas, I'm concerned about the black colors in summer. The carbon black has the luxury seating...ventilated seats. Dilemma...order a 2015 with mocha ventilated nappa leather like I want or... Take one of these heavily discounted 2014s?? Also, is DHP necessary? I don't do much spirited driving and the Dallas, Texas roads I consider better than fair. |

I can say this - DHP is truly amazing. It gives you multiple personalities in one car. When you want a well-behaved and balanced ride, just leave it in "Comfort" mode when you start it up. When you feel like playing a bit, press it into "Sport" and you suddenly have a much stiffer suspension that handles the weight of the car better in the curves. Traveling over cobblestone or a really rough highway surface? Put it in "Comfort+" and suddenly you feel less vibration jarring you about. But even if you're not doing a lot of spirited driving, the DHP has something called ARS (Active Roll Stabilization) that actively applies torsion to anti-sway bars to counter forces in the corner. This works wonderfully even when you're just driving "normally" and going around some sharper corners. It makes the car feel smaller and more nimble. Your other options would be (a) standard suspension or (b) sport suspension. If you're not into spirited driving, the sport suspension would probably be too much. It'll be stiff 100% of the time - and unnecessarily so if you hardly ever drive in a more aggressive manner. The standard suspension is a bit too soft, though, and you'll feel the full weight of the car through it, which negatively impacts the handling and driving experience IMHO. I'm a big fan of the DHP, though - probably one the best features on the car. Is it expensive? Yes - but it'll transform the way the car rides. If you're considering it, I'd just order the 2015 with the color leather you want, as well. These are expensive cars - even with a nice discount, it's a lot of money to spend if you're not getting exactly what you want.

I have a question about Dynamic Handling Package (DHP). I have been considering a 2011 car that has Electronic Damper Control (EDC). I do not think DHP was available until about 2013 at the earliest.
What are the similarities and differences between these two options?

DHP is the same as Adaptive Drive that consists of both Dynamic Drive and EDC.
