Money Stolen From Car While In For Service

Exceptionally annoying, but the change in my ashtray has been stolen FOR THE SECOND TIME while my car was in for service (two different dealers).

I’m very particular with what I keep in my car and I clean out the ashtray often, leaving it full of only quarters.

Called and spoke with the Service Manager upon noticing same, told him I understand my car was there for a week and there’s no telling who might have taken it, but that he MUST put his employees on notice that this is absolutely unacceptable.

Argh. :|

Wtf. I'd show up in person and talk to the shop foreman.

If I wanted to use their service again, yes, I'd speak to the shop foreman.

It's theft.

Otherwise, send an email to the owner and never go back.

Thank you, Gentlemen.

Yes, ridiculous all around.

Going forward, I plan to have them take pictures of the ashtray when they take pictures of my car when checking it in.

It's human nature
when you have a porter working for minimum wage, and they see a few bucks laying around, they will be tempted to take it. ITS a small enough amount not become a big issue, but enough to line their pockets and make them happy. complete cars are stolen and homes are broken into along with other major thefts these days, so it doesn't really surprise me that this happened. it happens in valet parking all the time so what would be the difference here? best thing is learn from it and don't leave change in the car next time because it will get taken

It's not about $3 in quarters. It is, however, about the quality of the repair and the state of mind of the service department.

Do you think a service team willing to grab $3 has a mindset to avoid scratching your paint, dinging your side panels, or ensuring the good quality of the work performed?

Once, I got my car back with sneaker prints all over the side skirts as that was their tool of choice to replace the side skirts.

No. Stealing the $3 is a sign that your BMW is not about to be serviced in the way you imagined.

What the hell good is having advanced robots build your car to spec only to have the shit kicked out of your car during service.

So, yeah, the missing $3 represents a key acknowledgement that the state of mind of the service team is not what you paid for. To me, I would not confront the lad directly because I would pray that the guy that needed the $3 so desperately is able to find a better life. At the same time, I would take my business elsewhere and notify the manager to tell them why.

Taking no action whatsoever is enablement. Eventually, $3 becomes $300.

You should just assume they're going to take your quarters and remove everything from your car before servicing. Sure, we all know they shouldn't take the coins, but leaving the money there and expecting the money to still be there when you get back seems pointless. If you're right and they leave the quarters, you've gained nothing. If they take the quarters, you'll be pissed.

never leave money inside the car then if you don't want them to steal it.

Couldn't agree more with that ^.

Thankfully, my dealership has always looked after my car and myself.

it matters. theft from customer vehicles is completely unacceptable. it's not about the money. service manager/shop foreman needs to have a word with his/her staff.

This thread scares me, I forgot to take my radar detector off the windshield... I pray it's still there when I get my car back.

Edit: I also remember reading this thread and I took all my quarters out just in case.

Usually they have a disclaimer sign posted, saying they're not responsible for items left in the vehicle. Does this mean they have a license to take anything they find in your car? My wife left an expensive pair of sunglasses in the center console when dropping off her car for service. They were gone when she got it back.

Why don't you just take your change out of your car when you take it in for service. The car detail guy is probably making $10.00 an hour and a few quarters can buy him a coffee at break time.

Because you shouldn't have to.

BUT, I always remove anything that I would lament being rid of before taking my car in for service. In this day and age, you simply have to.

I had a pair of oakleys stolen out of my glove box after my Mazda3 was totaled several years ago talk about adding insult to injury.

Its the way things are, unfortunately. If it is something I'd miss, I always take it out of the car when it goes in for service. Trying to work it out with the service manager puts him in a difficult spot - having to accuse, without any evidence, one of his employees - which is why the dealership asks people to remove valuables - a good idea.
