All Aluminium body of audi....Is it all good?
I am in the market for a family sedan and have been cross shopping audi s6vs a bmw 535/550xi.The weight of the BMW's and the accompanying tire/rim problems seem to be something of concern as the closest service center is 2 hrs away from my place.
I was almost convinced about giving audi a try when i cam across this thread on audiworld. I still cant imagine how the aluminum body just tore apart like a peice of paper after just a fender bender. Is aluminum body strong enough to tolerate a real collision?I mean ..I think it might be still safe with all those airbags etc... but i have a feeling they might get totaled way more easily...Any thoughts? http://forums.audiworld.com/showthre...2846017&page=2 Last edited by luvthestck; 04-23-2013 at 02:21 PM.. |

I was in an accident with me 97 E39, car was totaled, the ugly kind of totaled. IMO..If the car didn't tear apart like that, in a real collision the energy of the impact may end up in your or a passengers' lap. The S6 is sexy, but for the money I would say pick up a '11 of '12 CPO E60 M5. That thing is a tank.

Aluminum ... I worry about that every time I travel by airplane!
Seriously, it's not as if you'd be driving a pie plate ... Besides, many of the suspension and body parts on the F10 are also aluminum (or plastic / reinforced non-metallic materials). More and more lighter, high strength materials are finding their way into cars ... first appearing in high-end models like A8's, etc.

Aluminum has many virtues however damage to a body panel means that the panel has to be replaced when damaged making body work more expensive.

Every time I come across someone talk about E39... I keep wondering where did that BMW Brand go.Those cars are still loved today...and BMW seems to be hell bent to move away from that philosophy each year.
Coming back to the discussion on hand...how is audi's quality compared to BMW.I ask this as I haven't had any experience with audi in the past .But I keep hearing [random] that audi's built quality sucks compared to BMW.I certainly don't want to start an argument here...just looking for some first hand experience. |

Whether its Audi or BMW, in this price bracket, we are talking small nuances that may sway you one way or the other. Methinks, test drive Audi (if you haven’t done so already) if you like the car and it feels solid to you, then that’s your new ride. Years from now, whether a bimmer or a vag they can be just as squeaky. Good luck with your choice!

goingback to the original thread and aluminuim. I know what yuou mean about the doors. As they are mostly aluminuim, they are lighter for teh same strength but it doesn't have that bank vault door like fee like the E39 even if it achieves the same result. |

Take a look at www.wreckedexotics.com and look at the cars after the accidents to see whats left of them...you can look at all the Audi models as well as the BMWs. If you look at enough of the photos, you may be able to notice similarities.
