Buying CPO 535 and keeping it long term

I plan on getting 2013-2014 535 (CPO) and keeping it long term (at least 8 years). My plan is to put aside about 2k a year for maintenance/repairs and accumulating the money if 2K is not used in any specific year.

Am I nuts to expect that that the car will last that long without any major issues?

How many miles now?

Are you a hard driver?

Check the car, get regular oil changes (IMO every 7,5000 miles) and get all the regular maintenance done when it is supposed to be done.

Keep doing the regular maintenance work on time and you will be fine

I plan on keeping my CPO 11' 550 until it explodes. As long as you maintain it you'll be fine.

Hard to tell, 16K over 8 years is a lot of money, regular maintenance is more than non-luxury brands, but not crazy expensive. Battery, brakes, RF tires wear faster (need winters where you live) pretty much all parts for these cars are very expensive.

Anything that goes wrong out of CPO warranty is quite expensive to diagnose and fix. I think mechanically these can last long time, complexity and electronics are what scares me - but also what makes F10 such a great car.

You're also used to Acura reliability. In my honest opinion, F10 is much nicer car to own and drive than 2006 TL - which don't get me wrong I loved, especially with MT as yours is, but F10 is also a bit more "needy".

Good luck with your search for one, they are fantastic cars.

No, Andy74, you're not nuts to think a 535 could last 8-10 years without a major problem. But, as it seems you're already aware, the 535 is probably more likely than the average car to have a major problem.

What is virtually guaranteed, though, is a series of minor to mid-level problems that will be expensive to fix. Even as a 550 owner, the numerous non-N63 related problems I've experienced with the car (door seals failing, steering problems, camera malfunctions, coolant tank leaking, battery failure, etc.) are almost as worrying to me as the known problems with the N63 in the context of ownership outside of a warranty. I previously owned a 2005 Acura TL and had no idea how unreliable a modern car could be until I got the F10.

Maybe take the $2k and get the best extended warranty you can or go look at an A6.

BMW, as all cars do, come with their own set of problems. Overall, I womp on my beemers, tunes and all. They are very sturdy machines. There is always basic repairs depending on how you drive, but bmw has put a a lot of fail safes to prevent you from breaking your motor. Belts, hoses, spark plugs, and fluids will be the norm.

Last one I got up to 100k miles and the bigger repairs were turbos, covered under extended warranty at 74k miles. Hpfp covered, fuel injectors at 80k miles, cost 1k at friendly mechanic. The injectors were due to the tune.

No, but even minor issues can be expensive to deal with in terms of money and time. It's not easy to work on these cars, and at least my experience with mechanics has been far from stellar, so I lease to avoid all that hassle and aggravation.

If you want to keep for a long time, look at Japanese cars.

Thanks for all the responses.

I do realize that my TL is more reliable than the average 5 series, I had a 330 (ZHP) before.

I'm looking at cars that are under 40K miles and I don't drive a lot (my TL just turned 10 years and I ave 38,000 miles).

Regarding RFT/winter set-up, I'd probably get 535xi and get rid of RFT, should be OK for Chicago winters. Most of the cars in Illinois are xi, although I would prefer a RWD car and purchase dedicated winter tires/rims (like I had on my ZHP).

Do these cars still suffer from HPFP failures? I haven't seen many people complaining lately - did HPFP failures only affect N54 engines?

Those more familiar with BMW lineup might want to correct me but I believe HPFP issues are specific to 2006-2010 335 twin turbo N54 engines.

Oh, and 38K miles on TL, that's very low

I think establishing a relationship with a good independent mechanic that is familiar with late model German cars is key to your success.

A few thoughts:

1. $2k/year is probably more than sufficient, assuming some years will be more, others less, but $2k on average.

2. For that kind of money, though, you may just as easily consider an extended warranty. It'll likely cost you more up-front, but it would cover you for several years.

3. So long as you buy a solid car (wasn't abused, was taken for regular maintenance, etc.), and you continue to maintain it as prescribed, it should last just as long as you'd like.

I'm only looking at CPO cars with low miles, so I will have a warranty for the initial 3 years, I will not drive more than 8K/year
