Well, technically, the internal lighting is part of the "ambient lighting" option. That option is standard in the U.S., but not the rest of the world. It also comes on some 3-series configurations, but not all of them in the U.S.

It's appears standard on the 550 in US, but on the 535 it isn't standard and comes with the Premium Package. That is too bad as I think the BMW leatherette holds up extremely well, and I was planning on skipping leather.

The lighting has been and is the strong point of all BMW cars, not only on the new 5-series. Any BMW car is a pleasure drive on long trips, at night. The 5-series shows that BMW follows closely the new development in the field.
