Exclamation Updated: F10 5-series Fuel Sensor Recall (6,400 units recalled in US)

UPDATE 7/28/10

Quote:
BMW is recalling around 12,400 2011 BMW 5-Series sedans in the United States and China to fix a fuel-level sensor, the same issue that it recently recalled the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo for. BMW is recalling 6,400 units of the new 5-Series in the United States and 5,000 to 6,000 units in China. Spokesman Frank Strebe said that replacing a part of the fuel tank sensor will take about half a day.

Strebe said that there have been 10 reported incidents in the United States. NHTSA says the vehicles were built from Jan. 12 to July 1.

Got a call from my dealership that there is recall for the fuel sensor and I need to bring my F10 in. Apparently the car may show that you still have fuel even though your tank is empty. With the pulling to the right and this new issue, been in service 3 times in one month. Potential buyer beware!

EDIT:
Quote:
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 10V331000

Summary:
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN 2010 AND 2011 5-SERIES AND 5-SERIES GRAN TURISMO PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 12 THROUGH JULY 1, 2010. THE VEHICLE’S FUEL LEVEL SENSOR WITHIN THE FUEL TANK CAN BECOME WEDGED AGAINST THE TANK.

Consequence:
IF THIS OCCURS, THE FUEL GAUGE IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WOULD DISPLAY A LARGER AMOUNT OF FUEL THAN WAS ACTUALLY IN THE TANK. AS A RESULT, IF THE TANK BECAME EMPTY, THE VEHICLE COULD STALL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:
BMW HAS NOT YET PROVIDED THE AGENCY WITH A REMEDY PLAN AND NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.

Notes:
OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION’S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

I beleive so, I am not 100%. My car was held for the part which takes one hour to install.

My car does not pull to the right at all. Maybe they have a software update? My car got to the dealer yesterday and it's about 1hr from the vpc. 7/21/10

I've always told myself I would never buy a car in the first year of a redesign...but I just couldn't resist this time around. I'm sure all of these bugs will be worked out soon, but it is rather annoying.

Thanks for the heads up on the fuel sensor.

Yes, in a perfect world I could have waited until the second year of production. But fear not, that what the service department is for. Now is the time to bask in the glory that is the novelty of owing an early F10. For soon, your pool man will be driving a CPO F10 and they'll be as ubiquitous in the American landscape as the Honda Accord.

My car is sitting at the port and not sure when it will arrive at the dealer. Dealer says the same thing, part recall fixes being made at the prep center. Guessing it's the same thing. Not an auspicious start to a new car :-)

Well said. I still haven't seen another F10 in my area, so I do enjoy the fact that the car stands out from the pack.

I checked with my dealer about the Fuel Sensor, here is email:

Me: "My friend got a call from a dealership that there is recall for the fuel sensor and he needs to bring in his 2011 535i. Apparently the car may show that you still have fuel even though your tank is empty. Do you know anything about this?"

BMW: "I have checked your vehicle’s VIN# and could not find any recall information for it. Your vehicle may have a different production date than your friends vehicle. You will be notified if a recall is launched for your car. "

This was just posted on Carscoop:
Quote:
If your BMW 5-Series GT has covered several hundred miles since you last filled up and the fuel gauge needle hasn't moved a bit from 'Full', it isn't because of your eco-driving skills nor the car's extreme fuel efficiency. More than 6,000 owners of certain 2010 and 2011 model year BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo fastbacks manufactured from January 12 through July 1, 2010, are being cautioned by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about a problem concerning their car's fuel gauge.

According to the release on NHSTA's website, the 5-Series Gran Turismo's fuel level sensor within the fuel tank can become wedged against the tank. If this occurs, then the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster will display a larger amount of fuel than what's actually in the tank.

The German automaker has not yet provided details on the fix nor a notification schedule on the recall. Concerned owners of the affected models can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
So it looks like GT's have the issue, so this may be the same issue that some of our F10 owners are hearing about?

My friend's 2009 Nissan Rogue got recalled for the exact same thing. Seems like bug that's going around.

All the 5series Gran Turismos should be recalled on account of excessive UGLY. The current GT owners should receive the elegant and beautiful 5 wagon/estate as a replacement.

Sorry I couldn't help being cheeky on this one.

Cheers!

expected outcome. Not surprised; first year bugs are more prevalent. But that shouldn't stop anyone to enjoy their automobiles.

So sad?

Really?

Every experience I had at the BMW dealership was more than pleasant, usually kinda fun. I had a great service advisor though, so that helped.

Not like the owners will be out of pocket anything, just have to make time to take it in and pick it up. Dealerships should give loaners and the technicians will most likely look over the car while they are doing their work to make sure everything is a-ok. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.

Now if this was the 10th or 11th recall since production started, that would indeed be sad...

so manual and digital fuel readings are inconstant?
or is just the manual readings from the fuel gauge needle?
