Hey guys,

I'm thinking about getting rid of my runflats in the next few weeks (tires almost done) and I've read a lot about how standard tries are so much better. But what if you have a flat?

I know we can get it towed via BMW but that isn't always the best option. For those that have done the swap, what do you use as your backup plan as we have no standard spare tire?

a buddy of mine has a diy/ solution. I'll find the link for you. I'm actually getting rid of my runflats and upgrading to non/michelin since upgrading to larger wheels

don't jinx me! i don't have anything for a spare since switching to non RF's. but best decision i've made...those RF's felt like driving on bricks on very cold mornings.

Pay for a AAA membership so you can tow the car if needed.

I put that in a tire once... That stuff had to be cleaned out of the tire before it could be balanced; that was one expensive repair! I'll never use that stuff again!

BMW do an official inflation kit. Cost around £100.

That's what I have in my trunk anyway.

You mean the compression kit? Ya, its good only to put air as a temporary solution.

I ditched the rfts also but bought my set through discount tire and just purchased the warranty for a little piece of mind.

I'm also in the market for a spare. I think I'll follow Bake's advice.

at first i really thought if its non runflat our cars would throw a code lol im going to change to non runflats too in about a month or two

Im going for the compact spare, you can always take it out if you need more room for a day.... kinda pricey but the peace of mind will be worth it.. going with Mich SS keeping my stock spokes

I switched from the run flats, had the second flat of my life. It was on the highway when the low pressure light came on, ran about 20 mile at 70 before I realized it was no pressure, got another 30 miles at 50.

Got the sumotomos, tire rack has them for $120 a tire, well rated and at this price I will change them out at 70% wear, 45k mile warranty. Tires feel comparable in performace and much better ride.

For backup I have a 12VDC air compressor, pump and run if needed, and a plug kit. Don't want to use flat fix, probably ruin the pressor sensor.

I am lucky I am near a tirerack distribution center, I can pick up and save shipping. If you order rims and tires, mount/balance is free, did that a couple times in the past. They even helped me exercise warranty on michelins that came on my MDX, put the sumotomos on that also, 65K mile warranty.

I just put on aftermarket wheels yesterday, and went with non run-flat. For piece of mind, I'm thinking of carrying one of my factory front wheels as my spare. It's my third vehicle, so it doesn't get driven much.

Just got my Michelin SSports yesterday, followed by a 4 wheel alignment..

And i have the Bimmerzone compact spare in the trunk, its a little beefier than i thought, was expecting a donut, but really a nice spare tire, i would be comfortable on the fwy with this one.. and the tote has a nice handle for easy removal.

Can't report much on performance yet other than to say it feels smoother and quieter and so far its the best 1300$ (spare/jack incl) investment ive put into the car yet.
I got 45k on the stock conti contacts so they really were not a bad tire -minus the obvious RF issues.

I guess I'm one of the few that tries to stick with runflats...

BMW rims have EH2+ profiles to extend the range on the runflats well above 50 miles. I haven't found an aftermarket wheel with this, even though upon asking one manufacturer they noted this is standard.

Looking for runflat replacements is a pain though. They are expensive. And somehow my wife's tires are being eaten on the inside edge. I was told by America's Tire that this is a common tread separation, then when our shop foreman neighbor looked at it as an alignment (toe) issue.

This is the answer. Since 98% of flat tires are slow leaks, most likely all you will ever have to use is the air compressor.

You something to cut the plug once it's in. I used a razor, but a small knife would work
