Ticking Noise - After turning
Hello, some of you might remember a few months ago I posted about my car having this problem. I took it to the dealer 4 times and they couldn't figure out what was causing the sound and they were having problems duplicating the sound. The 5th time bringing it in I was able to duplicate the sound loud enough for the mechanic to be convinced it needed to be changed. They ended up replacing:
The noise after that went away and the car was back to normal. Now 5 weeks ago, I started hearing the same noise coming from the same exact area; however, it was light and not loud like before. Each week the noise became more often and louder. Now fast forward to today... I was driving out of my neighborhood and turned left to head down the road. The ticking sound started sounding much louder and noticeable even with my music volume turned up about 40%. Also before you anyone jumps to conclusions know this please. The only mod I had on my car during the time it first started was my intake! |

Axle is a CV joint. Constant Velocity Axle is the proper term.
I am not looking at a parts diagram for your vehicle but you normally have an inboard side and a outboard side to the CV Axle. When they start to fail they will click as time goes on they get worse, the problem for the technician is which one is the culprit, it's a sealed unit so you really can't measure run out or look for signs of wear. It could be that they replaced the one half of the axle that was bad and the other half was on the way out but not making noise yet. Most technicians would like to replace the whole thing but the factory will only authorize half shafts and only reimburse the dealer for that. It wasn't that long ago a CV joint was considered a wear item and not covered under warranty My guess is that left shaft is only half a shaft |

I have he same problem, kinda learned to live with the pain. I want to blame the electronic steering rack. I've had control arms, wheel bearings and bushing replaced and still clicks.

The rubber-booted part at each end are the CV joints. The solid part in the middle is the axle. |

I had your same exact problem, same side too. They replaced my hub bearing and this fixed the issue for me. I've also read about braking hardware/caliper causing this for some people. Now I am getting the same noise from my right side when I turn right, talk about pain. At 58K now. Left side was done at about 52K.

Did you ever figure this out? I have the ticking noise now too... 2011s are under a cv joint recall and even though mine is a 2011 535i xdrive I used BMW's site to see what was under recall and my VIN didn't show that recall...
I'm supposed to take the car in a few weeks to the dealership, I think I'm out of my CPO warranty now too at this point (if its not a recall), not trying to get raped on repair costs... |
