Exclamation Passenger Door Pops Open During Driving

I just purchased a new 2012 528i 4 days ago. As I was driving in to work this morning, the right passenger door just popped open from a fully closed and locked position. By "opened", I mean going from fully closed and locked to locked but not fully closed. As soon as this happened, warning lights came on as well as interior lights.

Called BMW assist and they connected me with a service rep at a local dealer, who insisted that this was a "user" issue, and this was not possible without me not having fully closed the door. Needless to say, I got a bit fired up as he now was suggesting that I'm too stupid to know the difference between a closed door and a partially closed door.

Does anyone have any experience or information on this issue? Would appreciate anyone's insight into this.

Thanks!

Door lock mechanisms are generally adjustable with any car make, your issue is rather rare and definitely not BMW specific. Bring the car back and insist on having the door verified by a knowledgeable tech. If necessary go to a different dealer.

Also, you can drive away on our car when the door is not fully closed. That means the doors were fully closed when you drove off then somehow it popped open.

Thank you both for your responses. @Evolve, you're absolutely correct. That's why I was fired up with the service tech's response. There's no way the door could have been partially open before it popped open.

Interesting issue, i didn't have that issue but i had an issue opening the door 2 times in 2 week period. I was on a road trip and at this one stop, i shut the engine off, ignition off, i pull the door handle once to unlock it and second time to open it but it wouldn't open.
i roll the window down ( very embarrassing) to pull the door handle from outside but it wouldn't open. so i pull the inside handle few more times which was unsuccessful so i pushed the whole door with my shoulder and then it opened. my car is a 2011 F10 550i with soft close doors/trunk.
second time at work i come to my car unlock it just by grabing the door handle ( keyless entry) car security system beeps and unlocks it but i can't open my door, so i lock it back up and unlock it few more times but it doesn't seem to work so i get in the car from the passenger side door which opens with out any issue, i pull the driver's door handle which doesn't help to open the door. so i do the samething, i push the door with 2 of my hands and it gives up, so i go around the car to the driver door and drive off.
I had a car for little over a month now and it already happened twice. I am planning on bringing it up to dealer so they can look at it and maybe change out the door lock mechanism.
Am i the only one ???????

That is BS, I had a brand new 7 series e65 that would do the same thing. It was not user error. It was software error.

The tech is mistaken.

Yes. I read about there here or in bimmerfest. Can't remember. A google search brings this up. Tell the dealer that he is full of it and to check out this link.

Was the partially open or was it just the warning light. If its just the warning light, it might be just a faulty door switch.

The door was definitely closed before I started driving. I actually heard the pop and saw the door move before hearing the chime and noticing the lights go on.

As mentioned by someone else on this thread, these cars are designed to not allow you to drive if any of the doors are not fully closed.

I believe the 5 series is one of those cars. If your door was fully open, the car should shift into neutral. The only cause I can think of in your situation is that the door latch is misaligned and the door was never fully latched in.

This exact same issue happened to me today. I've an '11 F10 and while cruising at 75 mph an hour ago, I suddenly saw the interior lights go on, the buzzer buzzing and the indicator to indicate passenger door is open. This happened after driving more than one hour so no way the door was not closed correctly, it just popped open while still locked. Is this a door mechanical issue or software that caused the door to pop?

I think you should really get it checked out because logically if the door was open when u first drove off the car would have told you "Um Hello! Ya forgot tha DOOR open!!!" I think its due to a loose/faulty mechanism.. Keep us updated

There is a known fault in the F15 X5 Soft close modules and they are being replaced as they cause this problem.
Maybe same fault here

I booked an appointment with my dealer next Friday and will keep you posted ... It is really very annoying issue when you think you might have a child in the rear seat and this could happen.

Also, the wind flowing into the car from the door was real noisy and caused the car to imbalance for few inches so I had to brake as fast as I could ... I hope no one experience similar issue!
