How will the SHOCK new car TAX rules affect you?

950% increase for some ...will this make you change your choice of BMW engine?

Clearly not. If you are considering a brand-new F10 at the 40k boundary (528i vs 535i) and 310 pounds a year is giving you pause for thought you are already way out of your depth.

I agree, it's a significant increase, but more of an annoyance than something that's going to dramatically change your buying decision / budget.

The increase in company car tax over the next few years is more likely to have an impact on sales of larger engined cars, but thankfully I'm out of that now.

I'm sure one effect will be a simplification of Option availability.

Manufacturers will be competing to offer the most car/toys for the £39,999 price point.

Maybe we will see the end of 20% plus discounts on list and see more realistic list prices with much less discount available.

They certainly did that years ago when the 19250 price point was introduced (1994 I think). All the major executive-car manufactures (inc. Rover at the time) produced cars to appeal to the fleet-manager (due to low taxes and decent economy) but also to the user (who actually chose them). The result was lots of under-powered, overly toyed cars that cost £1 less that the arbitrary limit set by The Treasury.

To be fair, this was company car taxation not VED so I suspect the VED will not produce such a strong effect.

Oddly - it might just be me, but I would probably not opt for a 530 or 535 again now. Even if I buy a good one with nice spec that is 2 years old I will still be hit, this is a massive shame. I'd be keen to know if the spec makes a difference?

The new rules only apply to cars first registered from April 2017.

These things can often be a blessing for the used car buyer. Used car buyers are more cost conscious and things like perceived high running costs tend to force down prices more than they ought to. This extra tax is less than a grand over the 3 years that you might own it. It is quite feasible that you will save a lot more than a grand when you buy it and if you keep it until it is 6, the stigma suddenly vanishes and it becomes more desirable to the market again.

I've bought a few cars that were cheap because most people thought they would be expensive to run. The extra running costs have always been less than the amount I saved up-front.

This just feels like a jealously tax to me. It might be absorbed by most and in the gran scheme of things, perhaps not that much but I really hate the way that those of us who have reached a certain level of income get penalised for being able to buy something nice.
Instead of that money going to taxes (where arguably a lot of it is wasted) , it could go in your pocket to be spent instead and moved around and help the economy in turn.it a few hundred quid that won't be spent in the shops.

(political) rant over!

I know what you mean but I doubt The Chancellor of the Exchequer is "jealous" of people who have to buy their own BMWs. The problem with letting people spend it on what they want to "move it around the economy" is they tend to spend it on German cars, foreign holidays and Chinese tat and it disappears. There is no easy solution because, ultimately, if you don't tax rich people you have to tax poor people instead.

I am not a fan of trying to control behavior by taxation. It is a bit different if you are using the taxes to pay for the social cost of the activity but simply upping taxes to try and reduce something that you don't like is very unfair. You are basically saying that we will make an activity artificially expensive so poor people have to do as they are told but rich people can do as they like.

AP - you should paste that into YT dude its a good comment mate for the world to see. !!!!!!!

Mr Pogle has a balanced arguement too - I see both sides... Personally I have to report and not comment but I do think that it is unfair this system in a few ways - and quite silly.

Some good points on here. Unfortunately the new taxation is going to hit all manufacturers and like some have said, there will be sensible ways around it. I was going to buy a new 7 or a new S8 next year, don't think I'll bother now. The bike ride to work scheme is looking tempting!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but something like an S8 won't really cost any more in road tax after the rule change?

I was trying to use man maths to justify changing my 535d for an M5 towards the end of this year and realised it wouldn't make a bit of difference if I waited until after April (notwithstanding new model release obvs.)

EDIT: Actually the M5 will be cheaper under the new rules...S8 will be £150 per year more.

How much is the tax on an S8 now? and M5
Did you look at the table from the AA on my description on the video. There is a before and after chart.
My 535d is about 180 odd now.. will be £450.00 if I got another one.

Currently S8 is £295 which will rise to £450. Not a massive difference given the car.

M5 is currently £500 and will fall to £450.

It's the high end diesels like our 535d's that are going to suffer.

That's what dealer discounts are for.... :-)

I'm quite liking a Ford Mustang V8 @ £140 per year after year one!
