Thanks for that....I went for the Amberella 0801, had it around 18 months now there's a new 0803 model. Will take some pictures tomorrow.

Interesting. The 0803 suffered from overheating and was replaced by the 0805. Which has now been replaced by the 0806, but only the first batch has been released and some of those have been problematic (GPS etc).

Have you wired yours in with a permanent live so it records when parked? And if so, does the car complain?

Sorry for the delay, I've been away travelling...
In my case i wanted it on a switched live so shuts down after a minute or so, sorry i can't tell you which fuse is permenant.

I don't like the suction mount and would much prefer something that could fit in front of the rear-view mirror. However, Garmin is a very reputable company and it's got me seriously thinking. Another bonus is that it's Mac compatible.

I'm thinking of getting the Transcend DP200 with the additional suction mount... For the guys that have this, does anyone have any pictures that they could post up showing the camera attached to their windscreen with the suction mount. Just want to see how it looks on the screen. Just thinking if it will look a bit big or not.

I see your power lead goes into the mirror housing, does this mean no trailing wires? I love the idea of doing this, but not with wires everywhere!

I see people spending good amount of money to have all sort of options ticked on their cars.
But when it comes to dashcam, most of photos give you beamer a cheap look!

Sorry, cannot resist it but that is fact.

If you can invest in your car then invest to have a decent camera with decent shape which should suits you FX.

One example is blackvue!

Not exactly 'into' the mirror housing Piers, more like i just prised the housing slightly away from the glass (actually with a small plastic tyre lever from a bike puncture repair kit) and at the same time pushed the power lead behind the cover. The wire then goes up into the headlining over the passenger side and down the B pillar to the fuse box. The section that holds the passenger airbag on/off switch comes off very easily for better access.

Any pictures of how you removed the passenger side airbag section and what it looks when removed. A bit more detailed description of your wiring would deb very much appreciated.

I fitted mine the same way. No need to remove anything, just squeeze the cable between the B pillar trim and screen. Totally hidden when done.

Rather than power from the fuse panel, I used the glovebox USB port.

If you pop the 'airbag' plaque off with a small screwdriver there is a torx screw underneath. Remove that and then pull upwards away from the dash to release the corner from the dash and windscreen and thats it.

There is already wiring running alongside the airbag. I ran my power lead with that wiring.

An interesting thread. The number of scams nowadays such as "flash for cash" or the practise of deliberate reversing into you and them saying you went into the back of them and whatnot makes me seriously consider going for one of these too.

Can any of these dashcams derive their power from the USB in the glove box? I do not like the idea of cutting into car electrics. That's the sort of thing I used to do on my jalopies when I was 18, not on my £32k car.....

If they can be so powered I would be interested to know how you ran the cabling out of the glovebox and to the Dashcam please? If there is one thing I hate it's visible cables!!!!!

You can run it from the cigarette lighter under the glovebox if you have one.

Or use an 'add a fuse' no wiring to be cut and can just be removed with no trace.

Yes, if you read down a bit you will see CraigUK's reply with the techmoan link, or see my post with a photo for a 'add a fuse'.....neither are 'jalopy style'.

Just to add on what Anad has said. Glovebox USB power comes on as soon as you unlock the car doors and stays on until a couple of minutes after the doors are locked (only when the engine is turned off).

In some models, is there not a camera / sensor behind where you have camera installed? i.e. could your camera position block this ?

The BMW internal camera/ sensors are front facing and flush with the windscreen. There is nothing on the back; so mounting anything under or close to the mirror housing cannot cause any blockage/interference.

I know the auto light and rain sensors are in mirror housing attached to windscreen, however on my F30, there's also what looks like a camera or sensor, not attached to windscreen right behind where this dashcam is mounted. I suspect this is the camera for the adaptive headlights / high beam assist.
The F30 that I had as courtesy car today did not have adaptive headlights and did not have this camera / sensor. I'll try get a picture tomorrow.
Maybe it's an F10 vs F30 difference

Thanks. The 0803 that Craig has looks really good on Techmoan but it gets a pasting for reliability on Amazon.co.uk. Need to look into this.
