Sound System Upgrade - Options- Your Thoughts On Upgrade

I have a 2012 535 xdrive msport but it has only the base sound system. Does anyone have any suggestions on upgrading it. Is it speakers only or speakers and an amp. With BMW are there any limitations on aftermarket given their propensity to put systems in place to prohibit any non bmw upgrades on any of their systems.
