I'm not going to get into an argument over a post Martin, however OP was looking to downsize. To me downsize means he wants something that is smaller than he has now, again imo a 6 Series does not fulfil this brief despite being a lovely car. I drove a 640d for three months when my X5 was written off and then bought my 530d as a replacement...

Relax The Beast who is talking about an argument as per your comment it is only a discussion between enthusiast! I was just clarifying what I meant by downsizing in the context of my earlier response, not sure why you even thought I was arguing about it!
I was just making the point that going from a 5 to 3 series maybe hard get use too talking from the experience of a friend, i.e. the 5 is far more refined now, if it was a move from the e60 to e90 I agree you looking at not a bigger impact as the interior are very similar and so is the quality, in fact more recommended to go for the 3 series e90 to make the most out of the performance when the space is not needed, but now with the F10 and how it is more like the 7 series a switch to new 3 series may come across as downsizing in quality too add the loss in trading the 5 series, hence the 6 series as an option!

TBH I agree with you, I really wanted a 4 Series before buying the F10 but just couldn't bring myself to like the interior and felt cramped in it! I must have gone to the showroom 10 times to view it and driven one three times, but I couldn't bring myself to buy one despite loving the external look of it.

In this scenario OP wanted to downsize, hence my feedback that a 6 just wouldn't cut it.

Thanks all for your passionate replies and discussion!

Alas, my car is still up for sale, and I have lowered the price again to £16950. I can't see myself lowering it any further and if the ad runs out this time, I think I'll just keep her. Seems a shame to let her go when she's been so good, and I refuse to give her away.

Anyway, again, thanks.

Yes, it's much worse than that. The sticking point is the MT, apparently.

Surely if the dealer is after your repeat business they can get their finger out and make you a more reasonable offer? You car looks fab :-)

When I changed from the F31 -> F10 my local dealer who sold me the F31 said even though you have 8SAT + all of the other options, you don't have Sat Nav, so we'll not be able to sell it for a decent price. I pointed out to him that when I bought the F31, he said the lack of nav wouldn't be an issue in the future.... I went elsewhere and got a much better deal :-)

I've found that it does seem to depend on the dealership / chain etc.

The manual gearbox on the 5 seems to be viewed so negatively that when you look at BMW Business Partnership lease costs the automatic versions work out £30 per month (x VAT) cheaper. It seems sensible to have a sticking point that you won't go below though - if the car is worth more to you than them, you should keep it

Dealers make more money out of trade in cars sold on than new cars ordered from BMW, so they will always try their best to make the biggest margin when handing your car over! A friend of mine left BMW garage as he couldn’t move to the 2nd hand sales team with more margins and commissions than the new sales team he worked with.

Well, we can close this thread off now I guess. I sold my car last Friday. He actually wanted to use it for a wedding this last Sunday as it seems.

I can't believe I went through with it really. I feel a bit sick in fact, and yet try to think about it in a more logical financial sense.

Now I have to find another car!!

Thanks for all your posts.
