Putting car into park question
Hi everyone,
With the new F10 you have to push the P button to put the car in park. It's different from the last couple BMW i've owned where you have to actually put the car into the park position. That being said there's been a few time I thought I pushed the P button but didn't which can be very dangerous. I would like to know if there's any owners that just turn the car off without pushing the P button because when you do that the car automatically goes into the park position. Does the harm the car in anyway? Thanks in advance for your input. Kev |

Turning the engine off will put the car in park position and it's the same as manually pressing the P button on the gear leaver.
I usually just turn off the engine to go into park. Where I have my mailbox there's a slope. I always leave the engine on when I step out of the car to pick up my mail. Then I press both P and engage the handbrake just to be sure the car won't roll. |

It is generally set to go into Park automatically if you do any of the following when the vehicle is stationary :
Switch off the engine if in D or R Open the drivers door when in D or R |

Lacster,
It does not hurt the vehicle in any way to simply shut of the motor while still in gear. From an electromechanics standpoint, it is exactly the same as pressing the P button and then turning off the motor, and is designed to be used in that manner. |

As discussed in a previous thread, I think it's a case of techno overkill.
Gone are the days of leaning out of the door whilst reversing into a tight spot and then there's the issue of the car being immobile without the engine running. In other words, the car simply cannot be moved in the event of a breakdown and if that happened in an awkward spot the car would present an obvious hazard to yourself and other road users. I'm surprised that this slipped through EU safety regulations! |

I have been obssessed recently with putting the car in neutral, pulling E-brake, letting the car rest on the brakes, THEN engaging park. would rather the car rest on the break than the transmission.

Nothing wrong with that but, as previously stated, you don't have to manually select park; it'll happen automatically when you switch the engine off.

I just hit the p button when I want to park. I have never used a parking break on an auto trans.

If you open the door and step outside while the engine runs, car will apply the parking break.
Also it won't roll with a door open. Try this if you have a Sports Auto, put the lever to the Sports/Manual position and press the "P" - F10 will put the lever back in the middle position and to the park - some nice robotics ! |

Not only will you be unable to push the car into the side of the road, but without the engine running, you won't be able to watch the gear selector moving all by itself - now that's a real bummer . |
