Question for Shiv or Terry re: N63/F10 550i

Do you guys have tunes in development already for the N63 engine in the F10 550i? If so, when can we expect to see them available?

Once we finish porting v4 over to the n55, we will begin work on the n63. We already have a 550 on order

The biggest difference is that the n63 is a reverse flow engine. That means that the intake ports are on the outside of the V and the exhaust ports are on the inside (along with the turbos). Just a really cool design that will really make things interesting when it comes to bolt-on mods.

And what about x35d? Have you started working on it? Are you going to start? I sent you an e-mail some days ago...

No plans for the diesel just yet. All these new gasoline turbo engines are keeping up busy.

Frankly, I'm very interested to see what a mature system for the N55 looks like. IMO, that engine could provide phenomenal tuning value. Only need one DP, ICs can't be too different from what's on the market... I could see 400whp out of the N55 for $3,000 (IC, DP, Tune).

The N63 should be beastly

Edit: also, the new ZF 8 speed is fairly robust so.... one less bottleneck

Funny that Alpina dropped it for the B7 for not being robust enough.
No they didn't. I test drove a B7 down in Palm Beach last week. 8 speed. Poor tranny programming, IMO. It "hunted" quite a lot.

any idea how much the 550 will produce after tuning?
RD Sport is anticipating 620hp (crank probably). I'd say that's very optimistic. I'll go with 590hp (crank) with DPs, IC, exhaust, and tune.

Fortunately, the 6 speed is still available on the 5 series. For as long as that's the case, that will be my transmission of choice. The 8 speed does seem impressive for an auto transmission, though.

Now I just need to decide between i and xi .. I'm not sure 500+rwhp is a good idea without an LSD (though the 5 apparently has BMW's "e-LSD").

Don't forget the piezo direct fuel injection. You can accelerate at any time and never have to worry about high levels of fuel consumption.

Shiv, will this affect the way you take approach in tuning? Will you take advantage of this technology?

Its not a gt mustang,full boltons wont only yield 40 hp especially in a turbo powered bmw. Look at the n54 335i for $349 you gain 100 hp. It might take some time but i do see the 550 hitting 700+ hp with just bolt ons.

@Jon335iFL

Considering how early the (single scroll) turbos kick in, I'd imagine that they're pretty small and are thus the limiting factor hence my conservative estimate.

@AltecBX

The N54 also has direct injection. No change in tuning methods required for the N63

@ruxp
the "e-LSD" is crap. It's just a traction control algorithm that applies the brakes to the inside wheel :

Have you taken a look at the n54's turbos lately . You aint getting any smaller than that and its been proven we can hit 500 whp on them.
