New Car Purchase F11 LCI 520D MSport Tourer

Hi, I'm new to this forum from E90 post and hoping for a little help/info. I'm about to press the button on a replacement car for my E91 320D MSport Tourer. I'm looking at a used F11 520D MSport Tourer (LCI Model) with 8 Speed auto, very keenly priced.

What if any are the known problems with this model and what should I be looking out for other than the ordinary? It's an 18 month old AUC so I should be fairly safe but good to know of any potential issues.

I've also a concern about the known issue of timing chain failure/rattle. This is a 2.0 184bhp diesel but I would like to think that as it's an LCI F11 only 18 months old then surely the issue should have been resolved. When was this issue resolved?

Any other help greatly appreciated.......Thanks!

A decent test drive should give you a good idea of the obvious, (does everything work?), and how it drives (watch for drivetrain vibrations), steers (steers straight and true, or tends to pull) and how smooth the gearbox is (smooth take off and no lurching).

There are reports of the occasional noisy chain in various late model N47 installations, reading just today of an F25 X3 having noisy timing chain replacement. You'll be in warranty anyway. For peace of mind think seriously about costing in the extended warranty after the 3-year warranty is up. You can take just the cheaper drivetrain warranty, if you are not normally into budgeting for extended warranties. Personally I wouldn't be put off the engine just on the outside chance of a chain issue, but would protect myself from risk.

Thanks for the replies, sorry my maths is a little suspect. The car is only 8 months old (dec13). Definitely the LCI model.

Thanks too Pete, by the sound of it there's nothing to look for in the way of common faults which is reassuring. All the items you mention are what I would consider fairly d standard checks. Good call on the extended drive train warranty too, didn't realise that BMW offered this.

Well picked up the car yesterday from Stratstone in Derby. Overall really pleased with the car which has been very well prepped. I've always been more than happy with my old E91 320D tourer but the F11 is just on a completely different level, so quiet and refined in comparison and although slower still fast enough.

To top it off I managed 60.2mpg over the 140 mile trip home. Hopefully the trip computer isn't being too optimistic!
