Intermittent Start Issues 535i

Hey Team... I have a 2013 535 with about 53k miles on the o’clock.

I’ve been noticing that about 20% of the time, when I hit the start button the car will crank and not start up all the way. But then on the second push it starts.

Anyone else have this issue? If so was it covered under warranty? My CPO runs out next month.

Sounds like a dying battery.

Go see Michael Duplessis at BMW Escondido. If you go there, tell him I sent you! He has done me right for the last 4 years. I'm pretty sure the battery is NOT CPO covered as BMW (and every other manufacturer) consider it a "wear" item.

Thanks for the reply!

Wouldn’t I get a low battery warning on my I drive first?

I would think so. I would also suspect the starter, but I haven't heard or read about the starter being a failure point. In any case, I would have it checked out before you loose the CPO warranty. The $180ish diagnostic charge is waived as long as the repair is CPO covered; then you would just pay the $50 "processing fee."

Crank and no start would not lead me towards a battery or starter failing, unless of course the crank is very slow. But in that case it likely wouldn’t start right up on the second push of the start button.

Before thinking it is the battery...

Is it cranking at full speed, or slow (sluggish)?

If full speed, it is not likely the battery or starter motor. More likely to be a fuel issue, possibly pressure not being sufficient on initial cranking.

Speed of cranking is a key to the problem solving route.

It is cracking full speed. I actually made an appointment at the dealer for this Thursday. I needed to get it in before my CPO runs out on Feb 15th.

I will keep you updated. Today there was no issue with starting. It comes and goes. It’s got me thinking I’ll get the good ol “unable to replicate”.

I misread... I thought you said slow crank. Disregard what I said.

At least you will have it documented as a problem.
