Did anyone with this problem try turning the ESP off? When I read about this "wind correction" and what have you I come to think of, maybe it is the ESP gyro or any other sensor that is the problem and sends incorrect output to the ESP. The ESP would then compensate for something that isn't there. A software update or mechanical adjustments would not fix that.

It is really a longshot because it would surely be logged somewhere and noticed by BMW, but at least it is an easy test that will not cost you anything...

Apologies if this has been discussed already. Didn't read through all 13 pages...

I'm going to pick up my 520d SE saloon end of January. At this point while driving from UK to Belgium the first thing I will do is testing the steering. I cross my fingers!

I don't think there's away to turn it off.

There is a button just above the adaptive drive buttons that will turn it off.

Page 96, US owners manual:

"Deactivating DSC
Press and hold the button, but not lon‐
ger than approx. 10 seconds, until the
indicator lamp for the DSC lights up in the in‐
strument cluster and DSC OFF is displayed in
the tachometer.
The DSC system is switched off."

The manual also confirmes that the ESP/DSC use the steering to compensate, not just power/brakes. At least in cars with IAS.

I didn't re-read this entire thread before posting this so my apologies if its a repost but check out this thread from 7-series over on bimmerfest http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=487021

I have this issue on my 11/26/10 build 550i as well. I have not yet been in for service for this yet as its mostly just an annoyance in my car - maybe not as intense as some of you are experiencing. But its definitely there and its definitely not right.

Update;
Dropped the car off last Tuesday, they call today and said that after all attempts at correcting the drift, the problem continues. They are in contact with munchen to see what the next step would be. I'm actually sorta glad because they are going the extra mile to correct this problem. More to follow.

You mean no drift what so ever? If you let go of th wheel after a little while the car continues on a straight path? What about the feeling while driving in windy conditions?

No pull what so ever on either side---straight

I don't know about the windy conditions yet.

Had stuff done to the forward chassis about couple of months ago, the car was much better with only slight drift to right, now after software update, it is straight. Don't know the details and number of software update.

Well I hope that the guys at Munich tell the shop to install said software. When I mentioned this to the shop at the first trial they said that my car is one of the most recent builds (week 49), and thus already has the latest sw version. I'm hoping for a solution on the sw because no matter how much mechanical adjustment is done, the electronic compensations is what I think makes the car zig zag during gusty wind conditions and perhaps the slight but present drift to the right. Anyone else out there with a fix car that feels different and perfect now? What was your experience to this point?

Problem - steering requiring constant input, vagueness, tiresome and causing driver fatigue.
Fix - New steering rack - 5000 miles later still fine, no problems.

See thread - "how does your steering feel"

Dealer can't get my car in until this Monday to take a look at this problem. They said they will put it on the rack and perform an alignment. What else should I mention to them? Software update seems like a hit and miss. I just don't want to make several trips.

Well that's been my experience thus far. They start with the basics, aligment, tire pressure, etc. If that don't work or if you come back complaining about it again then they move onto strut adjustment, if that don't work like in my case then they contact Munich (am in Germany now) for the next step. I would think that if a sw was available for this that they wouldn't have to ask Munich for advise, but hey at least they are trying right.

The stories here sound very familiar.
I'm driving my first BMW -520d- now since 3 weeks.
Great looking car, good motor, great quality of interior.

But when I started driving the car, I immediately felt there was something strange with the steering. The car regularly starts drifting, mostly to the right. And side wind bounce the car left and right. It is very noticable at higher speeds (as of 100 km/h).
To me it seems the electric power steering does not provide a stable control.
It definitely downgrades the driving experience of a great car.

I took the car to the dealer (in Belgium) and the chief-mechanic took it for a drive. He says the car has a very sensitive steering, but it does seem to react normal to him. He looked into the BMW database were all problems are reported and could not find anything.

The posts on this forum proves that the the problem is there, but the solutions seems not been clearly defined. Is is a mechanical problem in the steering rack or is it software.

When you had your software upgraded, I'm also interested in more details of the upgrade (reference numbers?). Was is related to the control of the electric power steering? ...

The following services are scheduled:

04BMZEP
20BMZBL

Looks like an alignment will be performed but dealer said it's not covered since mileage is over 2,000 miles? WTF?

I thought everything is covered under warranty for first 50,000 miles. And when I contacted them the car was under 2k but I wasn't able to get in until today.
