They need to test the new 5er's durability in the face of the inevitable rigirous abuse by pimple faced teenagers all over the world, out driving daddy's car

Is everyone really discussing how they feel about a car that has so many random components on it, and most of which are in test form and totally different then the final pieces. The entire interior is just some big, cheap, plastic blob that has no distinct features at all! Its just some temporary dashboard cover to hide the interior. And it does a GREAT job at doing that.

And look at the body, nothing about it gives anything away. Just like it was intended to do. Those headlights, those taillights, most of the panels, and pretty much everything else. . . is going to be changed for final production. This isn't like those face lifted E90 sedan pics you've been looking at. Those E90's are in a MUCH further stage of production, they are near complete. But this thing on the other hand, and just like all the other TEST MULES before it, is completely indistinguishable and in too early of a stage to critique anything.

Some test mules are more revealing then others. The more distinct and finished they look, the closer to reality and production they probably are. The more covered, ugly, random, and indistinct they look, the more likely they're early concepts and tests. . . far from production. At least, this is how it's been in the past, for decades now.

Except.... Look at the instrument cluster.... they are not random...this is what the next gen of BMWs is going to look like. Not bad.

No way, still not enough evidence. One blurry pic of what looks a white digital gauge isn't what I'm going to bet over. Nothing, other then the shift knob and maybe the positioning of the a/c vents, hints at what could be coming up.

The problem with these test mules is that they're so vague and unexplainable that two things happen. A) People waste time discussing pointless features about that test mule because it's features are too disguised and early anyway, and B) People's imaginations run wild, and that usually means false ideas and mis-information.

So as far as I'm concerned, these pics were cool and all, but still mean nothing to me in terms of what the new 5 or 7 are going to even remotely be like.

Look at the timeline, 2010 will be when the F10 comes out, they need to start closing in on a lot of the design this year. On the instrument cluster, the 5 series will be very much like the new 7 series which is due this year.

Wannt make a friendly wager that the 5 series will have this type of white on black gauges?

I for one am all for the electronic gauges. Hopefully us in the U.S. will finally be able to have gauges that don't show both MPH and KPH. The sleeker and simpler, the better.

I agree with boost nation that we can't really discuss too much about these pics because they don't show much, however, the new idrive controller, buttons on steering wheel, basically anything that is not covered up in big black plastic is 90% what is gonna be on the finished product. Its been like this on mules for decades (to use boost's language).

Hmm I guess the exterior is not accurate also, but I noticed the rear boot and boot line looks like a scaled down 7 Series, well most prob it would have an entire new design though. BMWs new designs normally would not be pleasing to the eye when you first see it newly launched. But after awhile the more you look at it, the better it looks. Thats why I got my E90 haha

We can't see anything bar a few buttons. Much of it can change, and I have a feeling that that won't be the final steering wheel.

One thing that can be determined regardless of the plastic is that this interior will, unfortunately, not be driver centric.

Definitely looks as though the new 5er will have the electronic parking brake like the 7er and X5

I will bet a red penny, the instrument cluster will have at least 1 high res LED screen.

my guess is they definitely have like a tracking bug on it somewhere or can find it using the gps nav system. but that's definitely a good idea haha

personally, I don't like the way the back end looks on that F10 spy mule.
