Legality of wheel spacers

I just found out today that wheel spacers are illegal in the Peoples Republic of NJ. I decided to put on some spacers for the back, the tire shop told me that they don't put them on as it is illegal and they won't risk the liability. Has anyone heard of this before? Who the hell is enforcing this stupid regulation?

I had the same issue at discount tire. They were saying that since the car has spacers we can not perform on them due to a safety and/or legal issue. I was like WTF??? Since when. So I raised hell and said prove it to me that you guys cannot work on cars with hub centric spacers...and the employee stopped me and said "hub centric? Your spacers are hub-centric? We can take care of it".....Moral of the story, people are dumb....As long as they are hub-centric, you should be fine anywhere.

Honestly, how would the blame ever fall on them anyway? They were just contracted and paid to do the work. Hell, tint installers will install illegal tint if you pay them.

I don't know that you would get a citation for such a thing, but I can attest to tire shops being hesitant to installing spacers before mounting wheels simply due to the liability that comes with it. This is especially so when using non-hubcentric spacers. I've witnessed first-hand that the slightest error in mounting a non-hubcentric spacer can create some serious issues on the road.

Just take the car home and re-install the spacers yourself.

i was at Tire Man the other day when they did the oil change in my Titan and i have spacers and i asked would it be an issue because i'm running spacers and the technician replied "are they hub centric?" i said yes! "than i don't see it being a problem?"

So I guess hub-centric is the keyword. Only if you get someone that has any idea what hub-centric is.
