My 2010 BMW 550 GT requires oil monthly since I got it 3/2010. I have a friend with one and he has never put oil on his since he got it 6 months ago. The dealer keeps telling me its usual. Has anyone experience this with the same car?

No noise. Just oil every month and now the engine malfunction light is turning on. So I have to pull over, turn off and restart engine. It gets scary because it suddenly reduce speed. Crazy!! Brand new car. This not a BMW quality machine.

I've been told that generically, less than a quart per 1K miles is within 'normal' bounds. Not nice, but acceptable to manufacturers and the industry. Now, if it can't meet emission tests, the feds would get involved, but with all the computers and controls, it would probably adjust and still pass.

Tractor Oil
MY engine sounds like a tractor - its cranky loud and humming like it doesnt want to be on - especially at idle, or in manual mode, or when revving at a high rpm. I don't know why this is but does not sound like a high performance or high tech powerplant. I thought this may be related to a turbocharger as I've never had a turbo charged engine? is this a defect?
And it gives me a "low oil" warning every 2000 miles so I have to add a quart of oil. What does this mean? I asked the dealer they claim the oil consumption is normal and that it is NOT covered by scheduled maintenance since its not an oil "CHANGE". I have never owned a car that ever told me the oil was "LOW" before a regularly scheduled oil change so this does not seem right.

Not on mine
I have had a 530D GT since last March and not had to top up the oil at all. I am due my first service in about 2 weeks time so that will be the first time anything will be donr to the oil from new.
No tractor sound either, just a nice refined (for diesel) purring engine sound. I would get a 2nd opinion from another dealer and insist that it is not normal to have to top up so often!! |

The tractor sound you describe is likely due to the engine technology - Direct Injection - my truck which has direct injection makes this clattering/diesel like sound as well. This is considered normal operation.

No oil change, no unrefined engine sounds
I have not needed to make any off-cycle oil changes or top-ups since new.
I have not had any tractor like or other strange sounds from my 530d GT either - in fact, it is so quiet that sometimes i forget the engine is on when I get out and have to reach back in to switch the engine off. The best investment I made in my life! |

Like I said, industry says it's 'normal' (or at least not a cause for a defect determination) until it gets to a quart every 500 miles. You never indicated how many miles you drive in a month...could be anywhere from a few hundred to many thousands. Lots of idling or really agressive accelleration or extended high-speed use could exaberate the problem. Lots of (really) cold starts, or mostly long highway stints? IOW, how many miles per quart are you at? Oil per month means nothing...

Yes, exact same problem and it is beyond annoying. They tell me that it is normal for some of the GT's, yet not all the GT's will experience this issue. They have been very creative in their various reasons so at least I can get a chuckle over the ineptness....thankfully I love the car enough to overlook this...

550i
I have a 550i-2011 that burns oil at a rate of 1 quart/1000 miles. It is anoying and I am very disapointed. BMW keeps telling me that is " normal" but I have friends with the exact same car and they don't have a problem. I guess it is just the fact that the engine is too lose. How this car will ever pass the pollution test is hard to understand.
