2014 5 Series LCI First Drive Review by Edmunds

Hi everyone,

First, this is my first post and because I'm Portuguese, sorry in advance for my writting errors...

I'm sharing my happyness with you guys, I've just ordered yesterday a BMW F11 535d Modern Line in White. My actual car is a BMW E61 530d in Black, is as allready 200.000kms but it still is a wonderful car, I'm going to give it in trade for the new one.

In a few moments I will post my order for the new "machine"...

Actually the 5 series in this article is the same size as the one launched in 2010.

While you are right that the 2010 version was bigger, moaning about it now is kind of old news.

Besides the 3 series is there for people who want a car the same size as a classic 5 series.

Does the 535d actually weigh almost 1000 pounds more than the 550i. I know diesel engines are heavier than their gasoline counterparts, but 1000 pounds. Is that right?

You're looking at gross vehicle weight, which includes payload.

LOL. Seriously. The new GS is non-comparable on looks alone (barf).

She might be heavier, she likes to be smoother and softer around the edges, and she sure looks a hell of a lot better. I'll stick with it, you guys can have the Lexus.

P.S: I've driven a NON F Sport GS, however it had 18 or 19" rims so maybe it had some Sport option, and it was not as sporty driving or taut around curves as my M Sport with the M Sport suspension. I don't think the GS is a much sportier car than the specifically 2013 M Sport F10. Even if so, it lacks a bunch in that weighted solidity and hefty quality many of us like from cars in this segment (and you can't compare its V6/6-Speed comparatively lethargic drivetrain to the snappy and fully-efficient N55-ZF8 especially with SAT).

It is the same as the 2013 except for the turn signals on the mirror, in terms of exterior appearance.

Not sure but I know mine and seemingly all 2013 cars aren't reporting the issue.

I like the review, but I'm partial to BMW's. The reviewer attended a "manufacturer's sponsored" event. This means he was wined and dined by BMW, was shown the highlights of the LCI and left to write a review. Does anyone really think this guy would write an unbiased review after all the attention he was given? I trust you people's comments much more than Edmunds, C&D, R&T and most all of the others. I do feel Consumer Reports is the most unbiased. They accept no advertising, buy cars anonymously and no one would want to wine/dine those geeks any way. :-)

I test drove the Lexus GS F Sport AWD for an hour. For a Japanese car it handles well, but comparing it to a 3 Series or 5 Series is a stretch. On a scale of 1-10 if the Bimmers are a 9,the F Sport is a 6 at best. I do know that the RWD version of the F Sport is a nicer drive- haven't driven it.

Cadillac ATS is another one I test drove and it's a 4 at best. Gimme a break. Some reviewers said the ATS compared to the Bimmers. The reviewers are either morons or totally biased. Plus it's a Cadillac and you have to buy it from a Cadillac dealer. Probably the most unprofessional group of New Jersey business people I've ever met. Yeah,yeah, it was one dealer, but left a very sour impression.

Hopefully BMW has improved it's reliability. I've owned 7 Problem free Japanese cars. My X3 is still relatively new. Lexus does build extremely reliable cars and BMW has been lagging behind in that department.

Fun to drive and beautiful, classic looking cars is what BMW has in my opinion. I do understand why some hate the GS looks, I'm not one of them. But, BMW, MB, and Audi make the most attractive cars in my opinion.
