Behind grille radiator air flow louvers

Had a low speed altercation with good size deer this weekend. Hit it straight on, going about 10 miles an hour. It did almost no damage at all to the front fascia, but it managed to smash both kidney grilles, and take out six of the louvers that control the airflow into the radiator.

It does not seem to be causing any problems with the cars operating temps, and is showing no codes. How much of a problem is it to run without them until I can get in there and replace the whole assembly?

Are any of you guys running without one? Anyone have a spare assembly they might want to part with?

You'll want to replace the assembly, and its a large job to do so as it goes in behind the bumper and crash structure. The louvers open and close as needed to allow the engine to heat up quickly as is appropriate for the ambient temp and to regulate overall cooling flow over the radiator.

Vehicle will need to be torn down to this point (less missing hood)

New shutters installed and bumper core reinstalled:

As to can you drive it.... Our 2012 535i has the louvers and our 2014 does not, so I would say yes. I kind of wish the 2014 had them.

I thought only the 4cyl had the louvers? I'll need to check but I don't think my car has them.

Wierd trend with BMW..

Some get the oil cooler with secondary radiator, some get the coolant to oil cooler on the oil filter housing.

Then some M-spots get the shutters, most dont.

All non M sport seem to get the shutters.

Isnt the shutters just to help with temp control of the engine? Why wouldnt M sport models need it?

Shutter was implemented to reduce drag, Shutter opens when engine temp is high. Mine stays closed most of the time unless I redline few times then I see that it is open.
