Try resetting Idrive.

With Idrive on, press the volume button for more than 30 seconds.
Idrive will then reset and reboot.

Fixed a E90 with the same problem as this a few day ago.

1) Get in the car with the key

2) Press the START button without your foot on the brake or clutch ( switches on electronics without starting the car)

3) Wait a few seconds for everything to start working ( Idrive screen/radio/navigation ect ect )

4) Press and hold the volume knob on the center console below the Idrive screen for more than 30 seconds ( not the one on the steering wheel)

5) After about 30 Seconds you will see the Idrive screen go blank and then just show BMW.

6) Stop pressing the volume knob

7) Wait for the Idrive to reboot and return to normal screens

8) Test Voice Control.

Strange.
I have not heard that they changed that feature on the 5 series. Works on a 7 and 3 Series.

Try starting the engine first then pressing and holding the button.
Make sure that the Idrive screen is on before you press and hold the button

Look in the back of your car User manual, they are listed there.

I realize this is an old post, but I just tried E90Fleet's instructions on my 2014 X3, and it worked! My voice command was restored! Thanks!
