Then again, if there are no big problems, you end up having a car that still looks like new for 6-7 years.

I had a first gen E36 convertible that was flawless for the 4 years I kept the car.

I have a first year car for 15 years, no problems. There are so many variables involved, engineering and the owner, maintenance, driving habits, and luck. Just because you bot the first year means little.

I wouldn't mind owning a first year production if it were 15 years ago. But current BMWs, not so sure. Just read my sig

Wow, you've had some really bad luck, I can see why you're once bitten twice shy. The last 4 cars I have owned have all been the first year. Never had any major issues with any of them.

The 2011 F10 we will take delivery of at BMW Welt in late Oct will be my wife's car. She leases and typically changes cars every 3 yrs. Although she drives only 8-9k miles annually, she doesn't like driving a car if the warranty has expired.

I, on the other hand, tend to keep my cars longer. One of my daily drivers is an '85 Euro e24 M635CSI and I still have my '73 2002Tii Roundie, which was the 1st brand new BMW I bought.

Although I admire and respect the technology and efficiency of the new cars, I still prefer the older models for sheer driving pleasure.

I 100% agree with you on this...
My only concern with some of the older cars I have owned, is that although there is a certain flare to them that can't be replicated in modern cars. I worry about getting into an accident with a Escalade. When I was younger this wasn't a huge concern. Now, I have mouths to feed and responsibilities. So the motorcycles and the MG roadsters are not gonna happen.

That's probably the biggest factor in all of this decision making.

actually finacially what's the better option? sell the car when it still has around 40% residual value at the forth year and then get a new one or run it down until you can't take it anymore? either the maintance cost is too high or just want an upgrade.

Agreed. Have a first year E90 sedan in the family that's 5 years old and has been more reliable than I could ask for. First year models don't automatically mean they aren't long term low-problem keepers.

I will be taking posession of my first BMW on Saturday-an imperial blue 535i. My plan is to keep it for at least 5 years, assuming the quality and fun factor remain high.

my car is around 80K i will put down 15K and pay around 1100 mo for 60 months.

if i lease i will probably have to put down 5k and pay the same amount for 36 months.

for 2 years of payments and 10 k i think it is worth owning this car.

It is an old thread, but just an update:

Although I planned to keep the car for 7 years, I sold it after 4 years. It was still in great condition

I moved on to 435i GC, still waiting for it

The next generation 5 series should be out by then!
A total of 39 months, which will be February 2017, which will be around when the G30 will be on the road.

New 5 series should lose some weight and should be a perfect balance of sports and luxury

My only complaint about F10 was that it was too heavy, otherwise a great car

I've had mine 10 months now, will probably change it in 12-16 months time, that way I would have had it about 2 years, and it still has some warranty left when I sell it.

Not sure what to get next, might be a new F11 or an LCI M5.
Been looking at the M4 a bit lately too, who knows, guess I'll find out in about a year.

I'm not optimistic the G30 will be appreciably lighter, but there are rumours the M5 will gain AWD and lose 150 kg (~300 lbs) which if true would be significant. I didn't choose the 550 X Drive this time because I didn't like the throttle tip in off the line and the car felt nose heavy. Fuel economy is dismal as well. Having said that, I'd like a bit more power that the N55 puts out so I don't experience a 3 gear downshift to accelerate rapidly at 40 mph. The 550 is effortless at all speeds.

Had I to spec my car agin, I'd have added DHP (no sport available with AWD) and possibly added night vision for those night drives to the lake (deer). Other than that I'm happy save for 50 or 60 HP.

We'll see what the next one brings.

I had my previous E39 530i for 10 years and I plan to keep my F10 for a similar amount of time.
Only ever had one issue in all that time which was an alternator that failed (just before I sold it)
My F10 is just coming up to 3 yrs now.
I don't plan to extend the warranty and basically cross my fingers and hope any unforeseen maintenance bills are minimal.
My annual mileage is around 6000 miles per year.

Plan to keep my one for a long time, paid for it cash and here in Ireland we have a 2nd tax VRT on cars purchase more of day light rubbery by the state that make a 520d as expensive as a 530d in the UK, hence have to keep it for a long time to make sense of the investment! better off investing on classic cars, looking to add 2002 tii or E30 325 pre-facelift to my 635 csi!
