Throttle response

I was coming up to a light while in traffic, long story short, light turned yellow as I approached. Too late to brake so I stepped in the gas and nothing, car felt like it stalled/delayed for a quick second then took off. Sure enough, red light camera caught me. Damnnnn, when I drove my '08 Acura TL Type S, response time was instant. No lag time. Is there a way to improve throttle response in a 2012 535xi MSport.

Also, when I drive in Sport+ I notice that when hauling ass the car somehow revs to within 2 lines short of red line and does not shift gears rather keeps accelerating. WTF is that about!!! Please any input/help will be appreciated....

That's what you call turbo lag it's the same with every car with a turbo ... And don't worry about how or when the car shifts it's programmed to shift when most affective...

Wasn't the twin turbo technology used by BMW developed to reduce turbo lag? I notice that lag is much less than it was in my Datsun 280ZX Turbo but it is still there.

What the OP described has nothing to do with 'turbo lag' and everything to do with the transmission. I bet if you would have had the tranny in sport mode it would have taken off like a shot.

So you think the transmission is by force breaking and then letting go? Ofc it's turbo lag. The reason you feel otherwise with the transmission in sport mode is because it will keep a lower gear. With higher revs the turbo lag won't be as noticeable.

As per previous post, am sure the 535's have twin turbo, specifically a smaller one added to give turbo at lower revs and avoid turbo lag.

I wonder if it needs a reset of kick-in if it is such a new car? It's on the forums here how to do it... I did it on mine and it worked a treat... I don't have the delay anymore in any mode (but in Sport+ I never had lag/delay)...

I think you will find after 2000 miles it will go away after your run-in.... it may be a control mechanism.... my car really opened up after 1500-200 miles and gets better each 1000 miles, smoother and more responsive

Bronson, I had the same issue, its the adaptive transmission. You can reset the
adaptive transmission by doing the following:

1 Switch off the car
2 Press start button without putting your foot on the brake. The car does not start.
3 Press the accelerator to the floor for 10 seconds
4 Restart car as normal

You may need to repeat this procedure once a while.

Adaptive driving should now be reset to maximum response.

That doesn't sound right, especially if you say that it stalled/delayed. Something didnt quite work right in that situation. You should try and replicate but its gonna be hard

So far noone has been able to confirm if this really is correct. It would be nice to hear BMW's take on this to have it confirmed or debunked.

Took your advise and I do feel the difference in response time. Thnx for the advice. I did however drive off in sport transmission while in sport driving mode. When my incident happened, I was in sport driving mode, normal transmission. That's how I configured sport mode.

You may or may not have to repeat this procedure in a few months, depending on how agressively you drive your car. Try it in normal transmssion, it should kick down faster. Just coast the car at about 20-25 MPH or so and step on it, the accelaration delay should be minimized. If you keep track of your gas milage, it will drop at first and climb back up slowly.

i guess nobody knows the answer to this? lol

well if it does, next time push the peddle ALL the way down and it will kick down the gear and you will enter warp-speed.

I would think so, my M3 had it and my 550 has it, I think it's universal on BMW.

I had a similar situation in my 328i in Comfort and D and it took off immediately - no delay! Odd yours didn't do the same...

I thought the Adaptive transmission reset itself after each shut down...
