Remember the E28 M535i? I don't see a problem here. I'm more interested in the tri-turbo diesel powerplant

Me too. And since BMW has developed a tri-turbo diesel powerplant, I am sure it must be based on a gasoline power tri-turbo! And what model would have THAT engine! Hint: F80 M3!!!

I think this is very telling of the direction BMW has chosen for the next M3/M4.

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

It's ridiculious to put an M badge on non M-car, just because it has as much torque as m5
M car is not only about hp and tq numbers it's much more!!!!!

This engine is a masterpiece and has much better numbers than its rivals' v8 diesels
For sure will not be diesel M versions, but this is one of the most powerful diesel engines available in this moment (Audi's v12 TDI is the most powerful, but is also very heavy).

I don't get it, why call this car a 550d when in fact its a six cylinder, my guess is so they can charge more the higher the number the more you pay. My guess is that diesel engine is going in the 7 series eventually.

What if the car has the M suspension components from the M5? Which would make it very similar to the E28 M535i?

so its very powerful with the torque rivaling V8s and much more efficient, i see no problem here. sounds good.

P.S. it does seem the M badge gets thrown around a little much these days.

It's not based on volume or the amount of cylinders, but it's power!
It makes sense!

Correct. The original E28 M5 and E24 M6 were initially called the M535i and M635 csi.

That's the rumor I remember reading about somewhere before. It would supposedly be a best of all worlds car with the handling of an M5, all weather capability of AWD, and the torque/mileage of the new diesel. It would certainly blur the lines of ///M and the standard 5.

BMW has been doing this for a long time now. Marketing strategy.

An example is that the E90 328i & 335i both have 3.0 liter engines.

And thanks to Active Sound Design, they'll make it sound like a gas V8.

Well.. this owner is obviously more educated than you are in terms of BMW history.
E28 M535is indeed existed in the European market. It wasn't an M car but it had an M badge on it.
