I believe in diesel performance and this should be great!

Math rules again, 3 MPG differential doesn't add up to 20-30%.
Numbers are numbers, and when you live in a city of stop signs every 400 feet, it's better to have an engine that can provide more off the line acceleration at lower RPMs. BMW has been good about this even with the petrol engines, with the 35i offering max torque from 1500-5000 rpms.

And when you drive a 5200lbs SUV (which should only be necessary if you have more kids than hands), a single mpg makes a world of difference, especially with a 22.5 gallon tank. Based on those highway readings, that's almost 70 miles extra. That means the diesel uses approximately 2.6 gallons for every 3.0 gallons the petrol engine uses.

But on that 5200lbs note, the X5 serves as a horrible full-size family hauler because the third row is so very compromised by the bounty of legroom offered in the second row. For two or three children it's fine, but for four or five children, no no.

I am. A lot of parents teach/punish their children on account of what they say is "a need to learn responsibility," but it's really because they "don't want to let their kids do things that require more attention and patience." I'd rather forgo falling under that category of parenting (because I know I'm not nice enough to be anything but authoritarian), and live my life unfettered by the indeterminable.

A lot of people would have a lot less grey hair if they lived their lives like that.
