BimmerTech: CIC Navigation Installation Notes
Hi everyone,
We had a pleasure to work on a 2011 US spec F10 yesterday. The owner bought the car with the standard 7" screen, which means no Navigation and no related features available. One of our installers is located in Kearny, NJ so for this particular customer living also in NJ we could provide a very convenient installation location. The up-to-date list of our installers/dealers can be found at www.bimmer-tech.net The CIC Navigation retrofit kit for this F10 included the following parts: - 10,2" screen - CIC head unit - USB port with cable - GPS antenna extension cable Additionally full retrofit coding and OEM Navigation activation with the latest North America map was included. We started the installation by running the GPS antenna cable from the Combox where it was originally connected to the head unit location. The next step was to install the USB port in the glove box and finally the screen and the CIC were installed. The new system powered up with no issues, so we moved on to the retrofit coding and Navigation activation. It took us around 30-60 minute to complete the last stage and finally the CIC Navigation retrofit was finished. Everything went as expected and the customer could enjoy his new Navigation system We used 100% OEM parts and performed the OEM Navigation activation. I would like to thank our customer for choosing BimmerTech to perform this retrofit for him and also thank our installer Rich, who did a great job! The GPS antenna extension cable connected to the original GPS antenna cable disconnected from the Combox: The CIC location with the new GPS and USB cables: The CIC main menu with the Navigation activated: |

I'am not sure i fully understand, so after i buy the hardware (cic unit, display etc) do i need to buy additional 'coding' or software to make this work with my car?
Also what is the OEM Navigation Activation and the navi can't be used without that? |

The Navigation requires the activation, which is the tricky part of the retrofit.=, but it's also included! |

That sound good!
Maybe something close to my location (Romania) ? Also someone told me that if I'll have to make a car software update, the CIC unit will need re-programed to work with the new software, is that true? |

We are offering the complete solution and we can do everything except the installation remotely, so your location is not a problem as long as you can install the parts yourself or find somebody to help you.

I consider driving to Poland and do this update, can you tell me an estimate for the hardware install?
Again, need to make sure that the navigation will still work if I'll have to do a car software upgrade (like they do couple months ago to my ride) , otherwise which will be the solution? |

I don't think there is a part number for the cable.
What will be interesting to know is what combination of Fakra connectors are at the ends of the extension. I guess type Z, male one end and female the other end. Right ?

Well...I am posting this cause that picture showing the extension cable at the Combox location disappeared somehow and for people like me, having a retrofit Nav with an improper antenna. I should mention that until now I never had a 3D fix in the service menu and when position was displayed (in split screen) the altitude was 0 all the time. Most often I could not use the Nav cause it will just show a wrong location.
I just completed the antenna cable install and here is what I used/did in order to make use of the existing roof antenna for the head unit. Just to be comfortable I used a 6m (~19.5 feet) antenna extension cable with Fakra male code Z one end and female code Z the other end (both of them, water blue). I have BMW Assist active so to keep it happy I did reuse and install the mini GPS active antenna that came with my retrofit kit. You will need one with Fakra female code H (violet) but you can modify the male one on the combox to accept the code B (signal blue). Or better yet, you can use one with Fakra female code Z. 1m to 2m (3 to 6 feet) cable is enough cause it will stay in the trunk or like I choose to have it just under the rear deck where the middle mounting point for child restraint fixing system is (using it as well as a fishing point for the wire to pass it in the trunk) so the antenna will live under that plastic cover (green arrow in the image). For reference I added the Combox connectors designation and images for what the mini antenna and extension cable looks like. An image with the track I choose to pass the cable from the Combox to the head unit. Finally a picture I took of my Combox just before starting, showing the original connections.
