ticking noise from front wheel
hey guys,
I noticed recently when I turn my steering wheel to right, about quarter turn, I can hear a ticking noise from right side wheel. same thing happens when I turn my steering wheel to left. I took it to dealer and they told me this is normal. of course I don't think this is normal. has anyone here experience the same thing? I'm no pro when it comes to suspension and steering but google tells me it might be tie rod making noise. |

Haven't had this on my Sep '10 535d and it doesn't sound 'normal' to me. I also think your dealer's statement that it's due to the tie rods is dubious - they only move laterally with the steering rack and don't rotate.
Is the noise frequency proportional to wheel rotation? Have a good look behind both front wheels to see if you've picked up any road debris, which might be catching on a suspension component - best thing would be to remove the wheels to check thoroughly. |

I can hear it with both direction, left and right. if I turn it till lock, I can make it click on the same side again. my dealer claims it happens on 5er and 7er, because of aluminum suspension. I call bull, because all bmw have aluminum suspension now.

oh yeah.. forgot to update on this. My dealer changed the wheel bearings and noise went away. Except it came back not as bad about month later. I kinda gave up fixing it since it's not that bad now.

If you guys mean a ticking noise occuring only while driving in turns, about 2 "ticks" per wheel revolution, somewhat sounding like having 2 stones stuck in the tyre:
That one is not normal - I just had it solved this week under warranty at my BMW dealership. It's a wheel bearing (rear left in my case), and BMW reportedly has some official fix not necessarily involving a complete replacement. The fix involved some grinding/resurfacing/whatever job with a BMW specific grinding paste. That's all I was told, so no more details, sorry.

That noise come from the brakes assembly, there is a small clip which "clicks" at low speeds and/ or when turning the wheels, which bends the axis and causes some flexing.
