As much as I love to see such a car, the problem is that we would need to be competitive in terms of pricing with the A3 and CLA but because of their FWD platform, we will certainly be at a pricing disadvantage unless we can somehow keep the cost down.

My 2 cents.
I love the "we" point of view lol

If BMW makes a conventional 4 door sedan or gran coupe 2 Series with rwd, I would buy one tomorrow if it were available. I don't even need an 'M' model. Just give me RWD, a 200+ hp engine, and a manual option.

I could easily buy a 3 Series, but I actually WANT something smaller. I have a feeling there's a lot of other people like me out there. People who can afford the bigger stuff, but don't want it. My E90 was the perfect size. I'd rather go a little smaller than bigger. Bigger is heavier, worse dynamics, harder to park and maneuver, so on and so forth.

Car pictured in the initial post looks really good. I'm assuming GC 5 door.

Manual and decent HP (easy with today's turbos) and you have a grown up hot hatch alternative that I think a lot of people will dig.

IDK how anybody could vote for it to come in BMW's "GT" styling considering every single one of them is just about the ugliest thing on the road.

I think a 4 door or 5 door 2 series could be great for BMW.

The thing is, I have the impression that BMW doesn't know how to project the value of RWD into new customers, the customers they are trying to reach with these new cars.

Of course there is a big challenge to compete with the CLA and A3 in terms of pricing, they're both FWD. But, I think the value of sportiness is very relevant in the automobile industry. In fact, ironically, these two companies, Audi and MB, are marketing these cars strongly as sporty. BMW has more credibility in this value, I think they can charge more for the 2 series being RWD cars if they know how to differentiate the marketing of the car "against" the A3 and CLA. Campaigns can even attack them for being FWD. (Specially MB's CLA, which in my opinion is a complete betrayal to their all time clients consuming their RWD vehicles by default).

I think it is a matter of BMW listening more to bimmerpost. Not in everything, but certainly in some things.

In the poll I guess it's about styling à la 6 GC or 4 GC.
It would be more practical with the hatch styling, but I think it's a matter of culture: USA vs Europe.
Anyhow, they should release it faster!

Lots of debate if it will be FWD or RWD, afaik in the future there will be only 2 platforms which will hold FWD ( 1er, as for 2er hasn't been decided ) and RWD ( starting with 3 series ).

small RWD hatch ++

+1 buyer for a 2GC.

I'm a big fan of the 2series but can't justify the upgrade over my 2008 E90 unless it's got a hatch. 4GC is too big. I'm may have to settle for a slightly younger E91 if the 2GC doesn't materialize.

M2 GC would be nice, but not needed.

A nice-looking, RWD 6-cyl 2 series GC is one of the only cars I'd consider pre-ordering without a test drive. The other is the rumored "panamera junior" porsche sedan if they make it small enough.

Doesn't matter to me whether its a 4-door sedan or 5-door like the 4 series GC. As long as it's not another tall monstrosity like the 5GT.

Agree with all the comments that the current 3 series is just too big. As of now, really happy with my e90 and don't see anything on the market I'd rather have.

A more flexible solution has been considered and when you first hear the upcoming announcement you will know it makes sense.
It could be symmetrical awd like subaru's awd system or a shortened version of 35 clar platform

Gran Turismo is now 5 Door Coupe? Wow! another fragmentation....
Why on earth there will be a Gran Turismo under the 2 Series?
GC makes sense, cause it goes with the other GCs around, but I think BMW stopped being the "making sense" manufacturer after all :P

I´m sure that if the 2-series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer was RWD, then AT and GT still where responsible for 70% of the 2er units. If you are going to compare statistics like this, then you have to compare FWD MPV 2er and RWD MPV 2er. It´s normal that MPV sells more than coupe/cabriolet here in Europe.

The internal debate appears to be between a 4 door GC like the 6 series or a 5 door GC like the 4 series. The thread title is misleading.

FWIW if they can "hide" the hatch door as well as they did on the 4GC I would prefer that, if it isn't possible on a smaller car I'd take the 4 door. Either way this would be my next car.

Let's be honest, the only reason why this is even up for debate is because of the sales success of the A3 and CLA.

BMW has lost me the past few years. The only way they are winning me back is something like a M235i GC with a MT. I need four doors, power, RWD, and manual transmission (preferably under 50k with respectable luxury options). I would prefer a sedan, but a GC 2 with options like turbo 6, RWD, and manual might win me back.

If BMW won't, then I will continue to take my business elsewhere (as I already have).

Give the guy a break. You are going to tell me that if you're a sports fan, you don't say 'WE WON' or WE LOST' if your favorite team does one or the other?

It's just a sign of support for the brand for crying out loud........

You would buy a FWD VW and Benz, you don't need a GC to do all of what you claim.
