Auto holding revs - ***now with solution***
Before I start, I am being very finiky (sp) here, but I have noticed that the auto, if on partial throttle, seems to be overrevving, only slightly, but enough for me to kick the right paddle to go up a gear earlier than the box would so as not to appear to be overrevving in town.
I am a bit of a perfectionist, but just wondered if anyone else had noticed it. Most of the time it is perfect, but town work less so....

yes I have on occassions and have done the same by manually chaning it down.
I have 2 possible theories on why it might happen.(No evidence to back up, just my guess) 1) the particulate filter is in its cycle of burning off the carbon and the higher revs are to keep the temps up. 2) the car is cold and perhaps it needs slightly more revs before it changes down. Does it happen once its all wramed up? |

My own car doesn't behave like that at all, very tight on keeping the revs down, but I'm in a bigger petrol so the software is different.
I had a F30 320d for three days and this revving business is something I encountered. Often seemed to be revving too much for the work in hand. I sense some of it is the software, to keep revs up to smooth the engine vibrations. Some of it I put down to my car being so refined and keeping low revs at low engine loads, hence noticing it more in the 320d. The only time my car will hold a rpm higher than normal is when cold, then the first couple of 1st to 2nd changes hang on a bit. But sorted within a 1/4 mile from a cold start. HighlandPete |

Another scenario is lifting off the throttle too quickly (or completely off) after an overtake, can leave the box in a lower gear, while it waits for your next input. It has to wait until you tell it whether you are really going to slow down, possibly brake, or continue cruising. I drive one particularly steep hill quite regularly and tried many different techniques to descend it. It can be driven down virtually at idle, to down changing 2 or 3 gears, at the same road speed. All from how the driver inputs the commands. Get the inputs correct and the 8-speed is a putty in your hands, best auto we've ever seen in a BMW, IMO. HighlandPete |

On the hills, yes not so much of an issue if on cruise control, all works well and I can understand the engine braking there. I will start to think about how warm the engine is at the time of over revving, maybe that is the answer, although I am sure I would have computed this as it bugged me at the time!

I personally don't see it as an issue but its jsut an obeervation. After a while you get to know what the box normally does and on teh odd occasions, its get your attention and the revs seema littel higher than perhaps what you expect.
I wouldn't worry about it though. |

I am not worried about it per se, and am pleased others notice it too, thought mine maybe broken!
FRG, I know exactly when it is doing it, and a lighter throttle is not as quick as clicking the right hand paddle, therefore, I would have thought the intelligent box would have done that too!

I've not noticed this on mine?
The only time I've noticed mine holding slightly higher revs is from cold, but I've put that down to the cold start cycle / warm up period. I've also noticed the gearbox is a little less silky, again not unexpected with things not bring up to temp. The only other auto I've ever had though was an '02 Saab 93 2.0t so not really a comparison. Have to say, I love the 8spd Auto box and honestly can't see me going back to a manual after this. |

I'm only 2,000 miles in so still testing techniques. I live in West Yorkshire so plenty of hills to kill MPG and do some throttle/gear testing!!

I've been actively monitoring mine for this and it just doesn't seem to be doing it. Hopefully that's sorted it Piers!
Handy tip for the future though for sure! |
