2011 550i only put down 362 HP w/ BMS Stage 1 Kit
So I just got my car dynoed at Ice Cream Cruise 2014 here in Omaha, NE.
The runs were 325, 362, and 350. I put in a BMS Stage 1 kit earlier in the day so I was expecting something like 410+. Any reasons as to why it's so low?

Did you literally put in the BMS the same day?
Someone with experience on the BMS and 550i can probably help out here, but I have seen that a piggyback tune can need a bit of driving before it "settles". It manipulates signals to the DME, which might confuse the DME for some time before it adapts (for instance it needs to adapt and increase fuel flow according to a higher MAF reading, even though the DME still see stock boost (because boost signal is manipulated into the DME)). This doesn't make sense to the DME at first, because with the boost level the DME sees at X rpm, the MAF should not be so high and it should not need to supply that much fuel... However it will adapt and increase fuel flow so that it matches the MAF reading and doesn't lean out the engine. You should drive it for a while before dynoing would be my advice |

It took mine a couple runs for it to adapt, I havent dyno it yet, but a couple things...
you have a 2011, which are known to have injector problems, that can be one cause, my buddy had his 11 550 dyno and it made high 400s then injectors went right after that run and then it was only making high 300s. another thing is the altitude in Nebraska is around 1,100 feet above see level, shouldn't matter much but keep it in mind when comparing to others.

I don't have one. I wanted to get a baseline done on Friday but my car was in the shop for an extended amount of time to get a radar detector installed.

Huh. I've heard of injector problems but my car has none of those symptoms such as lurching or any sort of check engine light. I will have them double check those at my next service in like a few thousand miles. I was looking to see around 400 w/ my BMS factoring in the minor elevation.

Pssh. :knockonwood: I still have another another 12k miles or like 6 months left on my free maintainece and warranty. I'll start shopping around for an extended warranty because there is no way I am driving a 550i without a warranty on it.

I recommend getting it checked out, there is an updated part to replace the injectors so if even one of the injectors is misbehaving they will have to replace them all. ....and there is a different spark plug that needs to get updated with the new injectors. ....so all new plugs as well. ...all under warranty

Nope. nothing out of the ordinary. Although, not sure what the ordinary is for a F10. I will make sure everything is up to par before the warranty though.

Hey I am in Omaha as well. I considered a 550i but went with the M5 due to the great lease rates.
I am thinking about adding a BMS tune as well and I was wondering if you did the install yourself or use a local shop. I also wouldn't mind getting a base dyno done on my car so let me know if there is room for one more if you get an additional dyno. Take care and be careful with the lower temps. I did a full throttle run on the interstate today and my traction control lit up at 60 mph! The M5 definitely has some power. I checked over on N54tech and it looks like Terry tested a 2011 550i and it put down 392 hp stock and 425 hp with a stage 1 tune. I think that is on a dynojet. BTW, what color do you own? I go to Creighton and see a black M6 all the time here. I saw a sakhir orange m5 in my parent's neighborhood out in West O. Is that you? One thing about Omaha is, if you plan on driving my Sarpy, make sure you get a good radar detector system installed because they are REALLY cracking down ever since ricers started doing speed runs down West Center.

And you're right. Pulling into my garage and the car was vibrating a lot. Like the water bottle in my cupholder was shaking as if I had bass all the way turned up. Pulling into my spot and check engine light came on. Engine Malfunction: Reduced Power I thought it might have been the BMS, but nope. Pretty sure it's the fuel injectors. Fun fact tho: I am out of warranty. I thought I had till March or April of 2015.... nope. August of 2014. FML. If I have to pay for this, I defeintely won't be able to order my Meisterschaft exhaust....

Just called BMW NA. They noted it on my account and will find out more after the diagnosis tomorrow.

My M5 is black sapphire metallic with black 343 wheels. Unfortunately, I have not been driving it too often. I will say that it gets a lot of respect. It is really in its element on the interstate say from 60 to 100. It is fast now but I can't imagine how fast a BMS stage 1 tune will be.
Good luck getting your car sorted out, is it at Markel? I have always heard good things about Sublime, have you been happy with them? Take care, Dave |

Took off the BMS and damn, my 550i just felt slow... It was fine for the first few miles before the error kicked in. It was my 550's first time at Markel and all the service guys had their jaws on the floor when I pulled it in. What's you main DD if it's not your M5?

It seems like the service guys at Markel are pretty good. I had my 1200 mile service done there and it turned out fine.
My wife has a lexus SUV that she rarely drives so I take that sometimes. I also have a toyota rav 4 for the winter. I just ordered a set if winter tires and wheels for my M5 from Tire Rack. Not sure how the M5 will do in the snow but that's why I have the awd vehicles. I have been driving the M5 more lately, the turbos really like the cooler weather! I am leaning toward waiting for the spring to tune the car. With the kind of winters we get, it makes sense. Dave |
