8-speed sports auto + 2012 528i (good idea?)

Is the 8-speed sports transmission recommended when ordering the 2012 528i? Can current owners express their opinions? Are the paddles any fun? Does the turbo lag during gear shifts?

I have the sport auto, but I hardly ever use the paddles.
I can't comment on turbo lag in a 528i, but my 535d does suffer from a momentary hesitation when downshifting under acceleration with the box in comfort and normal modes; however, I don't think it's turbo lag as the pick-up is instantaneous with it in sport or spot+ mode.
Either way, it's one of the cheaper options, the paddles and shifter look good and it'll enhance the car's resale value.

Thanks, but I'm just worried how well the sports transmission works with the 4-cyl engine in the new 528i.

I don't think you'll notice very much difference between the normal 8 speed auto and the sport box. Best way would be to drive both versions and see which one you prefer.

Believe me I would but no demo cars are available at my dealer.

That's a pity, in which case I'd recommend the sport auto as per my earlier comments.

test drove the 528 with 8-speed, definitely a huge turbo lag...but it all depends on how quick you push down the go pedal.

Some of that lag may be due to the electronic delay in the throttle by wire. In normal driving, I only notice a tiny amount of lag, and only down low.

As far as the sport auto, I don't use the paddles either. I find it almost too much to think about with 8-speeds to choose from. I never really know where I'm starting at so manually moving up or down without reference is kind of strange for me.

I guess the jury is still out for me. Let's put it this way though... for $500, I don't think you'll ever regret it.

normal automatic gear box and sport auto. gear box are the same gear box. Of course in 5 series automatic gear box is "must have" - this g.b is great!
