In my experience, as the kids get older and taller, their feet drop closer to the floor - certainly a 10 year old will be on the floor - and they have more leg room. I have seated 5'10" adults in the rear seat who say they have plenty of room.

Fully agree !!!

I had lots of concerns before I finally decided on 5 series. But after trying to fit kids and booster seat in all the cars I was interested in, I quickly realized I was worried for no reason (well this isn't true for E350, space wise I had every right to be worried there, handling not suited to my taste aside )

I'm 6'7", my wife is 5'9", kids are 6.5 and 11.5 year old, both clearly have our genes, both tall for their ages. No issues with the front or rear leg or headroom whatsoever. Just came back from 2.5 week vacation (3500km combined mileage) and everybody was perfectly happy and comfortable. Fully loaded trunk managed all of our needs (plus my wife's shopping spree ).

Can't comment on how big of a step down 535 is comparing to X5 space wise, but we all know people who fill up large SUVs and minivans and even end up lacking space, while others manage just fine in small sedans and crossovers.

Taking kids and car seats to test drives is no fun for anybody, your family or sales guy/girl trying to make a living, but has to be done. Even if they don't actually go for a ride with you, just to see how it all fits.

Lol!! We were growing too in cars.. My wife had an x3 when we had 2 kids.. Then 3rd came on and went to an x5.. Then 4th cane and started driving a minivan ... So for the last 5 years she has been driving a minivan .. Lol.. As for me as soon as my oldest was big enough to ride in the front i down sized.. Since most of the time i just pock or drop them at schools or a few events.. So for me Not need for a bigger car .. But if i need to haul stuff or people my wife is very nice in switching cars...
I would have gotten an XC90 or an LR4 if I had four kids--maybe a GL450 or a Q7.

I have both, an 08 X5 and a 12 535i xdrive. I think the 535 is a great move out of the X5. You wont regret it. you will get ample interior room, nice size trunk and better gas mileage and performance. Only thing you will really lose is the ride height and the spare tire.

I'm turning in my '12 X5 and picking up my new '15 550i tomorrow. My kids are 13 and 15, so I'm not too worried about them having adequate leg room, but I know there will be some getting used to the smaller sedan. Having driven SUV's since my first born arrived, I am excited to be going back to a sedan, and a pretty great one at that. Will share my observations after I've had it a while.

It's funny. I'm doing the same thing. Getting out of my X5 and picking up a 550 x-drive tomorrow also.

Congrats!

You'll both really enjoy the move imo, familiar yet a little more nimble. And a nicer interior/infotainment system.

Don't personally regret the move although I loved the X5...

OMG. Sad to say goodbye to my old X5, but I'm already totally in love with my new 550i after just one day of driving it. The power is amazing, but the tech and creature comforts are equally awesome. Other than the storage capacity and the inability to carry 7 (my X5 had the 3rd row), I don't think I'll be missing my old car at all. And on top of that, my lease payments are less than they were for the X5.
