Volvo S90

Got an invite to a pre-launch test drive of the new Volvo this Friday...must admit everything I have read about is very impressive, particularly the standard drive assistance systems. Have had five series for 17 years but this could the one that finally tempts me to defect from the brand. The AWD should compensate for the lack of RWD and the 235 BHP in the D5 doesn't look too shabby compared to my 530d. Potential downside is it's a four cylinder and I don't expect the dynamics of my M Sport but most of the time that won't be an issue. Anyone else tried one or have any views???

Not a fan of the way it looks specially the back shaped like the old Skoda Superb, and the dash design not far off the Tesla big ipad with every function via the touch screen, I find big touch screen more of cost cutting exercise by auto makers.

I think you are going to have to drive one for yourself as each of us have very different thoughts on what makes a good car.

I suspect (having owned Volvos in the past) that it could make an epic motorway cruiser capable of crossing a continent in comfort but the reviews do suggest that it is not the greater enthusiasts car. Having said that, if you are wanting the ultimate drivers car then whilst the 5 is better, there are other cars in the BMW stable more geared to putting a smile on your face.

But if you do drive one, please do feed back

Yes M@rk, I certainly will provide feedback, but I learned today they only have a D4 tomorrow which is the equivalent of a 520d in terms of power. As to other beemers I bought a new 330d MSport a couple of years ago but frankly got rid of it quickly because despite the great driving characteristics it was a horrible noisy low rent space to spend time in...or maybe I'm just mellowing with old age. My original E39s still seem to have the best blend of luxury and sportiness... But with the new G30 just around the corner I will probably hold fire until I see what that brings. Rumour has it that it will be a better drive than the F10

As promised, some initial impression from an albeit short run in the D4 which equates to a 520d in power terms. Didn't have the time to take it on a longer drive over twisty roads but I am looking forward to getting the D5 AWD with 240 BHP which I am to get for a weekend in couple of weeks. Leaving aside the awesome Bower and Wilkins sound system - a €3500 option here! - I must admit I am genuinely impressed. The interior is sublime, the iPad style interface for most controls seems intuitive and responsive and the standard driver assistance features are uncanny, like a gentle tug on the steering wheel if you try to change lanes without indicating (it's easy to override). The ride is comfortable and silent (even with sound system switched off, I reckon it's smoother than a BMW four pot diesel). As I said, I can't comment on how it handles on more interesting roads but I'll report back on my extended test drive in the more powerful version if anyone is interest. Conclusion: I may have just experienced the future!!
